Hi! My name is Emma, and I am an experienced and enthusiastic tutor located in San Francisco, CA.
I love to help people achieve their learning goals. With years of teaching and tutoring experience in higher education and as a volunteer, I tutor with a systematic and critical approach. My goal is to guide and support students on their path of learning.
I possess experience, technical skills, and a friendly attitude! I have worked with students from all walks of life and have studied abroad in Graz, Austria. I am proficient with the Office 2013 Suite, Windows 8, Mac OS, i-Pad, iOS, and Android platforms. I have an advanced proficiency of four languages, with rudimentary knowledge of several others, including Sanskrit.
My undergraduate work focused on philosophy, German, and classical studies. In addition to completing my B.A. with honors in philosophy at Eastern Michigan University, I wrote an honors thesis on Schopenhauer, which I presented at the Undergraduate Symposium in 2005. I also did interdisciplinary coursework, translating the philosophy of Lucretius from Latin.
At Georgia State University, my graduate coursework focused on Kant and German Idealism while auditing courses on Virgil and Cicero. I have taught writing-intensive philosophy courses at GSU and Washtenaw Community College. As a tutor at WCC, my duties recently included training and evaluating other tutors. I also researched online learning resources in French, Spanish, and German for the departmental WordPress portal, and I developed an online tutoring service. I currently write as a freelance contributor for the Ann Arbor Observer and have published several short works of poetry and prose.
It would be my pleasure to work with you toward your learning goals. Please contact me through WyzAnt e-mail. Thank you for your time!

Thomas has helped me prepare well for my upcoming English exam (Grade 9) by applying structure to my essay planning. Notably by defining the thesis statement, the body paragraphs and the conclusion. (Student aged 14)
Thomas may not have all the credentials that other tutors claim in their credentials but we found him very competent and willing to work with our child on the specific issues he discussed with our child. We will continue to use Thomas on a "as-needed" basis. We would recommend him to others without any hesitations. (Parents).
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a tutor at Washtenaw Community College, my duties included training and evaluating the progress of other tutors, researching online learning resources, and developing an online tutoring service. I have also volunteered as an English tutor to help increase literacy in Washtenaw County. As a volunteer tutor, I coached and instructed families, including children and individual adults, on how to improve their English skills. I am committed to reciprocating the guidance, support, and knowledge that has been shared with me throughout my collegiate and professional career. This commitment drives me at work and in all my endeavors.
