About Scott

Do you need to learn better English? You can do it! And I can help:

Pronunciation -- I teach you standard American English, to reduce your accent.
Grammar -- I explain it, and improve how you speak.
Expressions -- I help you learn idioms and phrasal verbs, which are important in English.

I will often give you homework that you will do between lessons. This will help you learn faster. In our first meeting you can tell me what you want most to learn (conversation, reading, writing, etc.) and I can start helping you. I usually give lessons at my home-office.

I am a native speaker, from California. I studied linguistics at the University of California at Davis, and I have also taught ESL at a university overseas. I am fluent in Russian and German, and have studied other languages, such as Spanish, Malay, and Italian. Languages are fun! And I work as a translator: I translate business documents from German and Russian into English.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I'm a university-educated native speaker, and have done a great amount of writing in school and then in my career.

ESL/ESOL

I have studied linguistics at the University of California at Davis, and I have taught English as a second language at a university overseas. I have also been tutoring people in San Francisco since 2010. In addition, I have lots of personal experience at learning languages. I have become fluent in German and Russian, and have studied a few other languages too.

Grammar

I'm an educated native speaker, and I've always done very well with grammar in English.

Proofreading

When I was in college I worked for a while as a copy reader for the daily student newspaper. When applying for the job, I found out that I was the only person who had ever attained a perfect score on their proofreading test. Through all of my work years so far, I have done very well at proofreading, and even have caught mistakes in Russian that native speakers had missed.

Reading

I am an educated native speaker of English, and I read.

Vocabulary

My vocabulary is larger than that of most other educated native speakers of English.

Writing

I have done a great amount of writing in school and in work, as well as fictional and other writing for my own enjoyment. And over the years, I have seen the quality of my own writing improve and develop.
