About Michael

Hi, and welcome to my Wyzant profile.

My name is Michael. I am a full-time, career tutor based in San Francisco. I am a graduate of Yale University (B.A. comparative literature ’14) with seven years of tutoring experience. I work with middle and high school students on SAT, ACT, and SSAT preparation; college essay composition; and academic Spanish and English. I was valedictorian of my high school class, achieved a five on all of my AP exams, and have 99th percentile scores on the SAT and ACT.

The basis of all my tutoring is connection with the student. I have seen time and time again how students can lack confidence in a particular subject, but when they are taught in a way that actually resonates with them, they discover that they are able to excel in that area. My job as a tutor is to see how each student needs to be taught and to teach in that way. I put time and effort into creating individualized lesson plans for every session. I stay in close communication with parents so that they can support the learning process and stay up to date on their child’s progress. I see tutoring as a creative endeavor and a valuable challenge for me as a person. My students consistently feel not only that they have achieved the results they desired, but also that they have become more confident learners.

I am currently undertaking a project of working with late elementary and middle school students on enjoying reading and appreciating literature. I think all parents are aware of how difficult it is to keep kids from spending too much time on screens. I take my literature students on a tour of classic, age appropriate literature so that they discover reading as a deeper and richer way of spending their free time. Literature has been my passion and refuge since middle school and I hope to share that with my students.

I am trained in the Mindful Schools curriculum, a scientifically-tested, secular curriculum for teaching mindfulness to young people. I can incorporate this into my work with students who have difficulty focusing or have anxiety around their studies. I practice Zen Buddhism, and, while I certainly do not try to indoctrinate anyone, I can teach students techniques for increasing attention and handling emotions. I have also developed unique methods for teaching executive function skills, such as organization, time management, and planning.

In addition to my experience as a private tutor, I have supported students’ education in a number of other ways. I worked for a year as field coordinator in Guatemala for the international education non-profit School the World. During that time, I also volunteered teaching at an afterschool program for indigenous students. I spent a summer in Mauritius teaching theater and academic subjects to underprivileged students of ages 6-20, and I directed a musical with the students of the Co-op High School for the Arts in New Haven, Connecticut. As my experience demonstrates, I feel passionately about education.

Approved subjects

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Great teacher!! — We can't say enough about what a great tutor Michael R. is. He's been tutoring my son Josh in 7th grade and now 8th grade Spanish. Josh says: "He gets straight to the point". "He's easy to understand and he's kind of funny". Michael has really made a difference for Josh's knowledge of and enjoyment in the language. As a parent I appreciate how responsible, reliable and effective Michael is. ...
