About Marie

I am a retired high school math and art teacher. I currently hold a California K-12 single subject teaching credential for art valid to June 2018. Currently, I continue to work as a substitute teacher at an area high school. The subjects that I would like to tutor are basic math, pre-algebra and geometry. I feel confident about one-on-one tutoring math because I have extensive experience doing it and I know how to fulfill your individualized needs.

A strong understanding of how to do math is very critical to be successfully in high school and beyond. I want to focus on students who are weak in this subject and yet unable to do well in the regular classroom setting. My goal is to provide the step-by-step reasoning and real life examples that makes math fun and easy to learn. I believe success leads to more success but someone needs to help you see the light. I will be that tutor and helping hand to give you the key and encouragement to ultimately become a successful self-learner in math.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have a California Supplementary Math Credential for 9-12 grades.

I have work experience at various High School teaching Algebra, Geometry and Basic math for over 20 years.

I have work experience at Monica Tutoring Center, Daly City, Ca. from Sept. 1998 to June 2004.

I have provided private tutoring at home on the same subjects from 2004 to current.

Chinese

First of all, I am from Hong Kong. I studied Chinese up to 11th grade before coming to this country. I can speak and write fluently in Cantonese & Mandarin. My husband is from Peking and we speak Mandarin at home.

In 1983-86 I was the principal for my church's Saturday Chinese School base on my teacher's trainings and knowledge about the language. In 1998, I was offered a teaching position with the San Francisco School District as a bilingual teacher for English and Chinese, after passing the Chinese language test they required for the position. (At that time, I decided to take a high school teaching position in my own major which is art and math.) Currently, I am retired and I would like to just do some tutoring in Chinese, math and art.
I believe learning the Chinese language is really beneficial for all students as they will very likely to encounter the need for this special skill in their future career.

Tailor-made lesson plan for our needs.

I hired Marie to help my staff build a basic working vocabulary of Cantonese, as we see low-income Cantonese speaking populations in our work on a regular basis. Even though this was new for Marie and required quite a bit of preparation on her part, she did a fantastic job of tailoring the lesson and concepts to our needs and really understanding what would be useful to us.
