About Josh

Elite mobile tutor, all subjects! My students have gone to Caltech, Yale, University of Chicago, and UPenn, and have ranged from middle school to masters level. I am the top tutor in the Bay for all standardized tests: I scored in the top 1% on the GMAT, LSAT, and GRE, and have a perfect scores on the SAT, ACT, SAT Math II, and AP Calculus exams. I apply my education consulting experience to design a unique curriculum for each and every student, and when my students put the work into it, I offer the fastest score gains of any tutor.

I have been an education consultant for Chicago Public Schools, and designed curricula for several courses, reviewed NASA educational materials, proofread economic models for Booth School of Business, taught elementary and middle school teachers mathematics under University of Chicago's VIGRE program twice, taught upper level honors high school math courses, and been ISACS New Teacher Institute Certified.

I have a large classroom-sized board in my apartment, and I bring a portable one to my students' homes. College classes I've tutored include single/multivariable, and business calculus (this student went from failing his first midterm to getting an A for the course), and real analysis. Middle through high school students for whom I've tutored have taken more elementary mathematics, and some physics.

I began tutoring when I was studying mathematics at the University of Chicago. When I graduated, I taught and designed the curricula for the upper level honors math courses at a private high school in Chicago. The following year, I decided to tutor exclusively so I would have more flexibility as I prepared for graduate studies, but eventually realized I had found my calling in this profession. I moved to San Francisco in 2013 for a breath of fresh air.

I placed out of Calculus with a 5 on the AP Calculus BC Exam, got 5's on the Chemistry and Physics C exams, and in my first year received A's on all three of the standard second year Analysis in R^n courses (essentially an extension of calculus into multiple dimensions, as well as an introduction to Topology in R^n). Before coming to the University of Chicago, I attended the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (OSSM), a boarding school, with a minimum workload of 60 hours a week outside of classes.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

In addition to perfect ACT, SAT, AP Calculus, SAT II Math II and GRE math scores, I also have a 99th percentile score on the GMAT. I teach GMAT Verbal (which is a harder version of the SAT), have been an education consultant for Chicago Public Schools, and taught all upper-level honors math courses at the high school level, as well as some college level. My students have gone on to succeed at the Ivy Leagues.

Algebra 2

In addition to perfect SAT, ACT, AP Calculus, SAT II Math II and GRE math scores, I also have a 99th percentile score on the GMAT. I have been an education consultant for Chicago Public Schools and not only taught all upper level honors math courses at the high school level, as well as some college level, but also designed them all. This includes Honors Algebra II/Trigonometry curricula. We used Blitzer (the book with the chili pepper on the cover). I know the material inside-out.

Calculus

As an education consultant for Chicago Public Schools, I designed curricula for all upper level honors math courses, including AP Calculus, and my syllabus was endorsed by the College Board. I have a perfect score on the AP Calculus BC exam, as do many of my students. I've also taught Multivariable Calculus to college students who've left me excellent reviews. I obtained my very difficult math degree from the University of Chicago, and have been teaching students for about a decade.

Discrete Math

I took this course in college. I know all about the integers, combinations, permutations, discrete probability theory, graph theory, lattices, vertices, edges, chip-firing game. I have taught students some of this material for SAT (combinations/permutations) and college courses.

GMAT

I scored at the 99th percentile on the GMAT my first time taking it. I have helped students raise their score by 100 points in as little as a month, and my students average a score increase rate between 3-7 points per tutoring hour, about 10 times faster than the rate of 2+ hours per point of self study.

GRE

I got a perfect score on the Quant section of the GRE, and a 167 on the Verbal.

Linear Algebra

I took linear algebra both in high school and in an abstract algebra course in college. I know all about vector spaces, linear dependence/independence, matrices, determinants, systems of equations, etc. I have familiarity with tensors, and so forth.

Precalculus

As an education consultant for Chicago Public Schools, I designed curricula for all upper level honors math courses, including Precalculus and AP Calculus, my syllabus endorsed by the College Board. I have a perfect score on the AP Calculus BC exam, and many of my students do the same. I've also taught Multivariable Calculus to college students. I obtained my very difficult math degree from the University of Chicago, and have been teaching students for about a decade.

SAT Math

In addition to perfect SAT, ACT, AP Calculus, SAT II Math II and GRE math scores, I also have a 99th percentile score on the GMAT. I teach GMAT Verbal (which is a harder version of the SAT), have been an education consultant for Chicago Public Schools and taught all upper level honors math courses at the high school level, as well as some college level. My students have gone on to succeed at the Ivy Leagues.
