About Keri

Molecular biologist by day and Star Trek fiend at night. Hey, what else do you need to know? If that's not enough to convince you that I'm an awesome choice of tutor, how about this: I recently finished my PhD at New York University's School of Medicine. I'm a doctor! (No, not THAT type of doctor. Please don't send me pictures of your aunt's moles.)

I have been freelance tutoring for over ten years, and I specialize in content and strategy for SAT and ACT math and science exams. I also have extensive experience tutoring high school science and math, including biology, chemistry, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. I'm experienced in tutoring Advanced Placement, SAT II subject test, or New York State / Common Core Regents exams.

My teaching approaches vary according to the needs of the student. For the student suffering from test-taking anxiety, I will be particularly patient and encouraging. For the math whiz, I've got some material that'll knock their socks off.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have been tutoring for the ACT math for ten years. I have a wide experience with students scoring at all levels, and I'll have a very tailored approach to address your specific weaknesses including appropriate strategies for anxiety, stamina, test-taking generally. I'll place the appropriate emphasis on certain math concepts where required, but I won't spend a lot of time on concepts you've already mastered.

ACT Science

I'm a scientist, and I love science! I've been tutoring for the ACT for ten years. Unfortunately, even AP level science classes often will not prepare a student for the ACT science. In fact, this is frequently the lowest scoring section for many students simply because they're not familiar with reading science articles. In tutoring, I have specific strategies that will help you navigate the passages a time-effective manner and arrive at the most correct answers.

Biology

As a graduate student in a biomedical science field, I'm a huge biology dork. I've taken too many graduate biology courses to count. I could talk about biology for hours. However, not everything is relevant, and that's often the problem students have with AP or college biology--what's important to know? I have extensive experience in both college-level biology classes and preparation for the AP exam at the high school level, so I will prepare you with the concepts and details most appropriate to your needs.

Chemistry

As a PhD student, I have completed college-level general chemistry and organic chemistry. For general chemistry, I have tutored extensively for the SAT II, AP and MCAT exams. In organic chemistry, I have tutored students in preparation for the MCAT exam.

SAT Math

I have been tutoring for the SAT math for ten years. I have a wide experience with students scoring at all levels from 400 to 700+. I'll have a very tailored approach to address your specific weaknesses including appropriate strategies for anxiety, stamina, test-taking generally, and math concepts.

Patient with my child

She has been teaching math, language arts and chemistry. She goes over lessons, the homework, work pages from the workbooks. She will design the lessons based on what the child already knows and what needs to be worked on.
