I have extensive experience teaching computer science and software engineering to novices, and have a long background of mentoring junior software engineers. I'm passionate about computer science and its foundational mathematics and logic, as well as software engineering best practices, and work hard to inspire that passion in my students. Many people whom I have worked with have remarked on my ability to break down complicated algorithmic analysis concepts in a way that is engaging and easy to digest.
I have over 10 years of experience building large scale systems, with a focus on high performance, stability, and scalability. Most of my systems process millions of transactions a day and perform complex analysis over terabytes of working storage.
I am passionate about understanding the tradeoffs inherent in large systems, and teaching those who wish to hone this wonderful craft we call software engineering.
I also provide interview practice. I've given almost 1,000 hours of technical interviews as a lead developer and a team manager. I offer interview practice sessions to sharpen technical skills.

I have not been a student for several years. Learning how to discipline myself and relearn how to learn was a challenge. Every time I approached a new programming problem, I became very nervous. Alyssa has taught me how to break down a problem and use what I know about a specific language. She has made this learning experience enjoyable again.
Alyssa is very responsive to my questions and has set aside time to help me as needed. During our tutoring sessions we will assess the priorities for the lesson, and then get to work. I never want a tutor to just give me the answer. She is very good about asking me leading questions so I can try and work the problem out on my own. If I don’t understand a concept she will give me a mini lesson on the subject and then we will go through some examples. She applies her industry experience during our sessions by giving me tips on how the subject applies to the real world.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have almost 15 years of experience engineering back-end, big data systems. This involves applied research in data structures and algorithms, mostly in the area of search. I'm self taught as a software engineer, which provides an unique perspective not often found in course materials or the classroom.
I've been working with Java since the days of Java 2 (1.4). Not only do I have a strong understanding of the core language itself, I also have broad knowledge of the JVM library ecosystem, which is critical for being effective as an engineer on the JVM platform. I've done bytecode optimization of core Java, as well as another JVM language, Clojure.
I'm actively working in Python, and have a deep understanding of such advanced usages of Python 3 as metaprogramming. I also have a broad familiarity with the Python ecosystem, especially such core web technologies like Flask and the Werkzeug libraries it is built on, and so-called concurrency libraries such as greenlet and gevent. I am a committer on the deep inspection project Jedi.
I have almost 15 years of experience in industry working with SQL. I have a strong understanding of set theory as it relates to the relational model. I also know how all of the top relational database management systems execute SQL statements on real hardware. I've built engines that compile other programming languages to SQL.
