Juniata College (Cultural Analysis)
Florida International University (Master's)
I specialize in the fields of critical and creative writing, editing, research, English and Literature, techniques to improve concentration, memory, and mood, Psychology, study skills, and World Religions. I have taught professionally at the elementary, high school, and university level (including Palmer Trinity School 2011-2013 and Florida International University 2009-2011 & 2014) and have tutored students in Baltimore and Miami for over 10 years.
Outside of my life as a tutor, I've been teaching yoga and meditation for the last 7 years (E-RYT 200 and RYT 500 certified) and am working towards a Psy.D. in Counseling Psychology with Meridian University.
In addition to teaching content, my primary intentions in every lesson are: to enable the student to feel like the experience is personal, relevant, and empowering; to guide him or her to discovery by training the mind to be open, flexible, and sharp.
Some Background Stories:
As an 8th grader, Johns Hopkins University hand-selected me to take the SAT early for my exceptional verbal scores on standardized testing. In high school, I continued to score in the highest PSAT and SAT percentiles in critical reading, writing, and literature. When it was time to apply to graduate school, my GRE verbal and writing scores were again, at the very top of the field. At Juniata College, I was named to the National Dean's List and chosen for Omicron Delta Kappa, a prestigious leadership honor society. While at FIU completing a Master's degree in Religious Studies,I was named 'Student of the Year', chosen to represent FIU at a private event with the Dalai Lama, and awarded highest honors for my Thesis on Buddhist Metaphysics.
Along the way, I have been a private tutor (in Maryland and Pennsylvania), teen adventure trip leader and outdoor educator (Camp Hazen, Chester, CT), yoga instructor (FIU, Palmer Trinity School, Yoga Center of Key Biscayne), Track and Field and Cross Country coach (Notre Dame Preparatory, Baltimore, MD and Palmer Trinity School, Miami, FL), high school teacher (Lansdown, MD, Parksville, MD, Overlea, MD, and Palmer Trinity School, Miami, FL), university Writing and Rhetoric instructor (FIU), and Religious Studies adjunct faculty (FIU). I enjoy reading games with 5 year olds as much as I love teaching study skills and yoga to teenagers and discussing high philosophy with graduate students.
Every student I've ever worked with has been my teacher as well. I look forward to meeting you soon.

Not only did Elena respond quickly to my message, but she was well prepared and prompt when it came time to meet for our session. She is smart, sweet, and funny and thanks to her, I passed my biological anthropology class! Patient, kind, and accommodating!
Congratulations on passing the course, Kat! You're a model student and totally deserve this success. Thanks so much for the kind words. I'll be calling you when it's time to write my biography!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I began working with students with mild to severe ADD and ADHD in 2006 as a substitute teacher with Baltimore County Public Schools. I taught in the Special Education departments of high schools in several long-term substitute teaching assignments (several months each) between early 2006 and mid 2009. I've also been formally educated by the the Learning Specialist at Palmer Trinity School about how to make accommodations and adaptations for ADD/ADHD students.
Anthropology was a major part of my undergraduate and graduate studies and one of my biggest passions. I have taken the following undergraduate courses: Introduction to Anthropology, Anthropology of War and Peace, Cultures of the World, Sociolinguistics, Myth and Mythology, World Regional Geography, Archaeology and Human Prehistory, and History of Anthropological Thought. And I have taken the following graduate courses: Native American Religions, Advanced Fieldwork, and Ethno-Historical Research Methods.
The Classics are another field of deep interest to me. Between undergraduate and graduate school, I have completed the following courses in the subject: Ideas and Power in the Modern World, Survey of Western Art, Modern Knowledge and the Self, Myth and Mythology, World Religions, and Seminar on Sacred Texts.
I was certified by the National Strength Professionals Association in Personal Training in 2008 and worked for some time as a personal trainer. I'm also a 200 and 500hr RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) certified by Sivananda Yoga in 2008 and 2013 respectively, have been practicing for over 10 years and teaching for more than 5. Lastly, I've been a competitive runner for 20 years, having been a decorated NCAA Cross Country and Track and Field athlete in college.
Much of my undergraduate and graduate studies revolved around the field of linguistics. I am a passionate teacher of all aspects of the English language and have successfully taught grammar to innumerable students ranging from 2nd-grade through graduate school.
Public Speaking is something I have loved doing since a young age when I would take to the theater stage or the church lectern. During my senior year at Juniata College, I won a prestigious oratorical award for a speech about sustainability and have gone on to give many formal and informal presentations and speeches in front of audiences of all types and sizes since that time. In teaching public speaking, I educate about the writing craft, the art of delivery, and the tools and tricks for staying calm.
After noticing that every major paper I wrote as an undergraduate student was about religion and the supernatural, I realized that the study and education of world religions is a tremendously important part of my life and decided to complete a Master's degree in Religious Studies at Florida International University. During the following two years, I had a lot of fun teaching Religious Studies at a private high school in Miami. My specialization is in Asian Religions, but I am fascinated by all of them.
I grew up living with an aunt who has Down Syndrome and spent time volunteering at her day care beginning at the age of 12. I began working directly with Special Needs students in 2006 as a substitute teacher with Baltimore County Public Schools. I taught in the Special Education departments of high schools in several long-term substitute teaching assignments (several months each) between early 2006 and mid 2009. I've also been educated by Palmer Trinity School's Learning Specialist about ways to teach and adapt to special needs students and various learning differences.
I have been running competitively since I was 8 years old and have always loved the feeling of the race. After being high school team captain and MVP of both the Cross Country and Track and Field teams, I went on to compete for Juniata College as an NCAA DIII athlete where I became named MVP, All-Conference, and All-Region. My 400 meter time was 59 seconds, my 800 meter time was 2:17 and my best 5k time is 17:56.After college, I coached my high school alma mater's Track and Field team for two years and most recently was the Girls' Cross Country Coach at Palmer Trinity School for another two.
I've been teaching Yoga to children, teens, and adults since I was first certified in 2008. Since moving to Miami, I spent two years teaching out of FIU's Frost Art Museum as a graduate student there, taught in India for a month after graduation, and then continued teaching yoga and meditation as a Religious Studies teacher at Palmer Trinity School. I began teaching classes at a local Yoga Center in early 2012, and now teach classes and private lessons there and at my home.
I received 200hr certification as a teacher from Sivananda Yoga, underwent an Agama Yoga Immersion in Leh, India in 2011, and recently completed the Sivananda Yoga 500hr advanced teacher certification.
