About Janis

I have been teaching for 25 years to students of all ages and levels. My experience ranges from young beginners taking private lessons, to chamber music coaching and theory/aural skills training, to high school aged students on track to majoring in music in college.

I have worked in a variety of environments: schools, students' homes, studios, my home, and community centers. I have taught students from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds, ethnicities and cultures. I have taught gifted students and those with learning disabilities. I am comfortable in a private or group setting. I have taught composition privately and in a group. I have prepared students for ABRSM exams. I continue to mentor past students, writing letters of recommendation to universities, taking an interest in their musical and academic lives. I have been a pianist most of my life and a composer for almost as long. My Bachelors' and Masters' degrees are in composition.

I use a variety of method books when working with beginning piano students. I start with a lesson and theory book, then add a technique book. Every student begins learning scales immediately. I encourage transposition and composition. I emphasize reading but also aural skills. I also teach advanced players and college students, and adults of all ages; I stress a good, healthy technique to ensure a lifetime of musical enjoyment. I teach primarily classical repertoire but if a student is interested to learn a popular song, I am happy to incorporate it into the rest of the lesson. I can teach beginning jazz, elementary harmony and basic improvisation skills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I have taught ear training to students of various ages for over 20 years. I teach interval recognition by sight and sound. I encourage students to sing particular intervals and use well-known melodies to help students recall and hear intervals. I use Hindemith's Elementary Training for Musicians for sightreading rhythms and for rhythmic dictation. I give melodic and harmonic dictation to students to prepare for college-level courses and to generally improve their melodic, rhythmic and harmonic ear. I teach transposition to young piano students to develop their melodic and harmonic ear. For beginning students, I play short phrases with slight differences in either rhythm or pitch so they can distinguish subtle changes. I teach students the primary chords and encourage them to learn them in all keys. I will play short chordal progressions and have students name the chords in the progressions. I teach them the difference between half and perfect cadences by sight and sound in all keys. I also discuss with the student basic structural forms of pieces (s)he is learning so (s)he can identify those structures by ear when listening to other pieces.

English

I am about to complete an intensive grammar course, so all the rules for tenses and conjugating verbs are newly minted in my brain. I am a native English speaker, in process of taking a TESOL course. I feel I could help students with writing and grammar assignments. I have over 20 years' experience teaching music privately and in group settings. I have worked with students of all ages and abilities.

Music Theory

I have taught theory for over 20 years to students of all ages and abilities. I teach analysis quite early to help students understand form and to understand how melody, rhythm and harmony shape form. I teach students to identify intervals and chords by sight and sound. For every piano student I use a theory book that coordinates with their lesson book. I often use Faber and Faber Piano Adventures for beginning students because the theory book covers ear training and sightreading, both important skills to learn, regardless of the instrument being studied. In group situations I teach interval recognition by examining scores via dictation. I discuss harmonic development in the different periods of western music. I use notespellers and flashcards to help students learn their notes, key signatures, primary chords and intervals, in addition to common tempo markings, dynamic markings, etc. For my piano students I teach scales as soon as they can coordinate their hands. I teach the scales according to the circle of fifths and assign them simple harmonic progressions using the primary chords. Later, I introduce minor scales and secondary chords. I stress counting aloud when learning a new piece or when practicing a difficult rhythmic passage. When sightreading, I stress looking at the score for time and key signature, beginning and last note, repeated phrases and/or bass lines. I always try to make theory fun and exploratory, and encourage a student's natural curiosity about how music works.

Piano

I have more than 20 years' experience teaching private piano, theory, composition to students of every age and level. I also coach ensembles, accompany singers and instrumentalists. I have a BM and Master's degree in Composition.
