My name is Michael and I am a tutor of many disciplines! I graduated from UCLA in 2012 with a Bachelor’s in Linguistics, and I will be applying to graduate schools for Education this coming fall. I am looking to gain more experience in working one on one with individuals, though I welcome group sessions as well, and I hope you’ll consider me to be your or your student’s tutor!
A little about me: I love to run, swim and bike through different places – especially in national parks! Hiking, photography, writing, reading and hanging out with friends take up the rest of my hobby and personal time. I am also always teaching myself new and different skills and studies, so you’re guaranteed to be hiring someone dedicated to academics!
If you wish to know more about me and any more of my experiences, please don’t hesitate to contact me!
Payment/Rate an Hour
My current rate is $45 an hour. I am flexible with the rate, however. I understand that budgets can be tight, and I do not want to discourage you with the cost of the tutoring. I very much am looking for the experience as well, and I am not solely doing this for the money (although admittedly I am very much in need of it). If you contact me for a job and would like to negotiate the rate an hour, I would be more than happy to do so! I’m looking to build a strong network and I sincerely want to help you in whatever it is that you need assistance. My career ambition is to get into the field of education or the environment, and this year I will be applying for graduate school to study precisely that. With that being said, please do not abuse my understanding. I am indeed a struggling, post-college individual! Please know that you will be getting your true money’s worth. I have had tons of experiences in college and outside of it with teaching, mentoring and tutoring. I’m dedicated, hard-working and my intellectual curiosity flies through the roof.
Availability and Location:
I am very willing to work with someone online. At the moment I live in Sausalito, CA just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, and I am flexible with driving distance.
In terms of my availability, I am very much open to working around your schedule, and even working on the weekends. We can work together in finding the perfect time that is ideal for each of us. As for where, I am not impartial toward coming to your home, provided that it is within a reasonable driving distance from where I am located (and provided that you are okay with opening your home to me). I do not mind meeting somewhere public, however, such as at a library, a school campus or a coffee shop – whatever works for you works for me.
Preferences in Whom I Tutor:
I don’t have any preferences or restrictions! I love to work with kids – I hope to work with them full-time in the future – but I also have experience tutoring and teaching people of my age and older. I have developed lesson plans and led classes where my students were both foreign professors and foreign students at UCLA, and I am very comfortable when it comes to working with people of different cultures (I welcome it!).
How I Work
My style of tutoring is very dependent on whom I am working with, their learning style, and his or her overall needs (along with the subject matter being covered). I will tailor and plan lessons toward what we together feel needs addressing, but I will always come to a session prepared and with a goal to accomplish each time. In our first session I will: focus on setting your goals and what you hope to accomplish specifically in our meetings; getting a taste for where you stand with the subject matter already; how you work; and with enough time, getting started with a bit of tutoring! I’m here to tutor you and help you get results and achieve your goals. Whether it be learning the Spanish language, working on pronunciation in English, learning better study habits and time management skills, or other topics that I am qualified for, you will be getting high-quality tutoring by a UCLA graduate who takes great pride in his work and everything he does. Michael is really professional, smart and very knowledgeable . He has been teaching English pronunciation and I am learning a lot through his classes. He is always well prepare and make the classes very interesting. Overall and excellent teacher!
Michael is a great tutor, who cares about his students and pays attention about the specific needs of a student. He is very responsible and answers emails/texts at a short notice. Also he does research about the topic, so he can help you better.
Five stars definitely!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was born and raised in California, and as such I am a native speaker of the English language!
I graduated from UCLA with a degree in Linguistics, and as such I see language from a very different point of view. I have much experience in dealing with other languages and how they work, as well, and this facilitates the learning of those I teach along with the actual teaching. With this background, I can help you learn English in a much more understandable way and, of course, in its entirety: reading, writing and speaking.
If it's grammar that you need specific assistance with, for example, then not a problem! I will look into how your language works, namely its syntactic properties, and when we meet I will be able to relate to you how the syntax of your native language relates to the syntax of English, so that you may better understand the differences and from there master the syntax, or grammar, of English.
I can also greatly improve your pronunciation of the English language due to my linguistic background. I have studied phonetics and phonology, and I would be more than happy to help you in terms of your accent should you wish to improve it (I personally think accents are cool, however). But if you are interested in improving your accent, it is something that I could help in! One way of doing so is by helping you to position your mouth and tongue in ways that mimic the ways that native speakers of English position their own - it's amazing the difference that a slight adjustment of the tongue can make!
If you are interested (or alternatively if I contact you myself) then I would be more than happy to discuss my qualifications further. I do have experience in helping others learn English. For one example, I taught at the UCLA Dashew Center (International Center) where I led my own class with students that ranged from professors to graduate and undergraduate students.
I am a native speaker of the English language and I would love to help you improve your own skill with the language. It's a very useful and fascinating language to learn and I welcome any opportunities! Please don't hesitate to contact.

I am qualified to tutor in this specific subject because I am a graduate of UCLA who always completed every assignment of his on time and was prepared for every test. I graduated at the top of my class at a prestigious school, and it was because I knew how to study effectively while working jobs and leading a balanced life. My major of Linguistics was not an easy one, either, especially that UCLA has one of the best programs where that field is concerned.
I have also held previous jobs where I was hired precisely because I was successful in school. I served as an Orientation Leader to freshmen entering their first year at school, and in that role I guided and mentored them through a two-day orientation process. I also worked as a Peer Educator at the Learning Center of my school, where I met one-on-one with students and helped them with time-management, study skills, how to cope with stress, and generally gave them advice on how to tackle college better.
Ultimately, I know how to study effectively, and I know how to get yourself to study in the first place.
