About Laura

Hello there! I am a California and Nationally Certified School Psychologist working at a high school on the Peninsula. I earned my Education Specialist Degree and Masters in Education in School Psychology at the College of William and Mary in May of 2016 and 2014, respectively. I received my Bachelor at Villanova University in Psychology and Global Interdisciplinary Studies with a Spanish minor in 2013. Within the realm of tutoring, I have a rich background and expertise in differentiation of instruction, special education law, study skills, and test taking strategies.

I have experience with working with students of all ages. While I currently work with high school students, I was a school psychologist intern at a local middle and high school last year and was a school psychologist practicum student at two elementary schools during the 2014-2015 school year. In 2013-2014, I taught Spanish I to 8th, 9th, and 10th graders at a private school in Virginia. As a tutor, I have worked with a range of students: from college sophomores taking Intro to Psychology to supporting elementary and middle school students in all subject areas.

I prefer my sessions to last one or two hours. I start each session by building rapport with the student. I like to discuss the student's learning style and his/her experience in the classroom. At the end of each session, I hope that the student will walk away with a better understanding of the material and with tools to study more effectively and focused.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aspergers

I am a California and Nationally Certified School Psychologist who has worked with a number of students on the Spectrum. Over the past two years, I have worked one-on-one with over 15 students with Autism to determine whether they met the eligibility criteria to be identified as a student with Autism and qualify for special education services. I also consult with special education and general education teachers to work with students with Autism.

I have taken a number of class to better understand students with ASD: Characteristics and Adaptations for Students with Developmental Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorders; Instructional Design/Methods for Students with Disabilities in the General Curriculum; Characteristics and Accommodations for Students With Mild/Moderate Disabilities in the General Curriculum; Neuropsychological Bases Of Behavior; and Psychoeducational Assessment.
