I'm a Japanese native, who was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. Although I've become a naturalized citizen in the U.S., I've kept up with the very special language: Japanese. I've been tutoring Japanese as well as ESL as an independent private teacher (as a contractor) for over 30 years. I also have an extensive experience being an interpreter and a translator. I once taught at ABC Languages in San Francisco, and Sakura Gakuen in Pleasanton, CA. But I much prefer tutoring on an independent basis because it gives me more freedom, time flexibility, and creativity and ideas. I always try to custom tailor my sessions for each student.
As for the Japanese language, I cherish traditional Japanese but do keep up with the new and trendy style as well - as languages are living 'creatures' that never stays the same. Sometimes, however, it saddens me great deal to be outside of Japan and have to see the kind of ugly and preventable damages that's been happening to this old, complicated yet uniquely beautiful and fragile language. Its speed of deterioration scares me and makes me feel really powerless. But as the world is changing so quickly and is getting smaller everyday, the speed of communication is becoming more and more demanding, and I know I must accept this fact and make peace with it, so I do force myself to keep on learning and adapting. But at the same time, I still focus on keeping the 'core' of this language (or any other language for that matter) intact and try my best to protect its classiness. At times, though, I do discover some of the new phrases and ways of expression funny and refreshing, and they crack me up! It makes me realize that maintaining an open mind is also important.
However, in my private sessions, I do emphasize the importance and clarity of building the solid fundamentals. Unless one builds the foundation thoroughly, he/she may never be able to build a solid house on top of it. While sticking to the foundation, I also provide lots of creative and hands on 'fun' actions because I'm a fun-l

Personable, Supportive, and Professional Tutor!
Yoko is a pleasure to work with. She is a very lovely and personable teacher. She seems to really care about her students and wants them to succeed. She was always very supportive and I never felt put down or discouraged like I have been with other teachers. She was always very communicative, even off the clock via texts and emails. She made me feel very cared for as a friend and a student. She was also always very punctual and prepared for our meetings. She was truly a professional. She understands the importance of making studying fun and engaging so you'll never feel bored! Not only is she very friendly and funny she is very flexible and willing to work with you in many different ways. Her lessons are almost bespoke and catered to your interests and I never felt like I was just another student learning the same old things from a textbook. She's also very creative in finding different entertaining ways to teach Japanese e.g. She sent me many entertaining and useful YouTube videos from Japanese tv shows. She's also a very smart, educated woman who knows a lot about Japanese culture and can teach you a lot about life/customs in Japan which can be just as important to know as the language itself. She's also frank about Japanese culture in an insightful and amusing way that I have never found another native Japanese tutor to be. Her English is totally fluent with a limited accent so there was never a language barrier. I looked forward to working with her every week and in between sessions as she was always quick to answer any questions I had. I've had several Japanese tutors and Yoko is both very unique and receives my highest recommendation.Marie, 19 lessons with Yoko

Friendly, Caring, and Knowledgable Tutor!
Yoko is an excellent Japanese tutor. She is very knowledgable and passionate about the Japanese language: she will make sure that you understand how to speak proper textbook Japanese, and then help you customize your dialect, depending on your gender, age, etc. She also taught about cultural aspects of the language: from varying the type of speech depending on context (which is VERY important for Japanese) to understanding which aspects of the language are being degraded through lazy, information-age usage. On a practical level, Yoko was very flexible in terms of meeting times and locations and was very conscientious about meeting my needs. In this case, I needed to brush up on my Japanese for a job interview, and she was very helpful in preparing for the interview in a variety of ways: working through mock interviews and providing other helpful job search materials. On a personal level, Yoko is a very caring tutor, whom I would now consider a friend as well as a teacher. Throughout the process of preparing for the interview, she would frequently contact me to find out how things were going and to provide moral support and encouragement. Outside of our scheduled lesson times, she would send me supplemental materials, such as interesting Japanese websites/webcomics and dramas, to help me gain more exposure to the language. I would highly recommend receiving tutoring from Yoko!Lexi, 3 lessons with Yoko
