Stanford University (PhD)
I received my Ph.D. in philosophy from Stanford in 2008. Since then, I have taught at Stanford, Reed College, and the University of San Francisco. I have worked intensively one-on-one with scores of students to help them achieve top-notch reading and writing skills. Currently I primarily tutor students at the college level in philosophy (including ethics) and writing/rhetoric. I am deeply committed to teaching and work hard to make learning fun, always explaining difficult concepts in concrete, everyday language and familiar examples. I make students comfortable with humor and compassion, and set goals toward which students can make measurable progress. I am sensitive to the personalities and learning/thinking styles of individual students. In addition to tutoring and teaching, I perform in theater and write creative non-fiction. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
