About William

I have taught in three countries and on three continents (UK, South Africa, and USA). I have an excellent range of subjects and can get through to nearly any student. I specialize in English and Drama, but also have extensive experience in preparing students for tests. I am very comfortable teaching most sciences and math up to high school level. My strengths are that I can quickly analyze a student's learning difficulties and seek ways to surmount these obstacles in order to help them progress with their learning. I am popular with my students and their teachers and parents as I have the innate ability to identify a student's problems and see the disparity between what they are supposed to know and how much they actually comprehend. This puts them at greater ease in their mission to conquer whatever academic or life skill problem they are trying to overcome. After thoroughly researching the needs of the client, I try to draw information out of my students and listen to what they feel comfortable with, and what they find difficult, and proceed from there.

I have had many rich experiences in life, such as working in theater for ten years, writing and directing; living in different parts of the world; working in many varied jobs; which have given me a well rounded view on life and the world. I have also taught students from all walks of life, from those in poor townships in South Africa, to Ivy League-bound teenagers from Pacific Heights. Studying in both England and the US has also informed my learning and teaching skills too, and I am currently studying for my Master's in Secondary Education, to add to my Bachelor's degree in English Literature. I also have a TESOL certification, and am currently a substitute teacher in a number of schools in San Francisco.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I had an excellent classical education at Westminster Under School and Eton College. There I learned Latin from the ages of 8-15, as well as studying ancient civilizations and several poets. I hold a Latin GCSE qualification: Grade A.

English

I have a BA in English Lit and a MA in Teaching English.

Philosophy

I took philosophy as a minor at undergraduate level.

SAT Math

I have successfully tutored many students in SAT subjects and helped them improve their scores.

Soccer

I have played 'soccer' all my life. I know more about it than most people. I recently played in the teachers vs. students game at my school. We (the teachers) won.

Tennis

I have played tennis since I could hold a racquet. I played in my school team. I even went on a tennis tour to Saddlebrook in Florida.

Theater

I spent ten year working in theatre in England, Scotland, South Africa and America. I have worked back stage as a stage manager, doing lighting and sound, props, and prompting. I have also directed 5 or 6 plays in successful runs. I have also written 2 of my own full length plays, one of which was performed at the Edinburgh Fringe, and the other in London. I also collaborated in writing and producing a play with the Drama Society at my high school where I taught in South Africa. I directed of my short plays at the Marin Fringe Theater Festival in 2009.

Thoughtful, deep understanding of Shakespeare

William helped my son develop some initial themes for a Shakespeare paper, and then patiently went through the entire play looking for examples and coaching him through the analysis. My son walked away with a much deeper understanding the play. He described William as "chill", which is teenager parlance for William is an excellent tutor who connected with my son.
