UC Berkeley (Chemistry)
Columbia University (PhD)
I am a native of the Bay Area who graduated from Saint Ignatius College Prep ("SI") as a high school student. After SI, I earned a B.S. degree in Chemistry from UC Berkeley and a PhD in Chemistry at Columbia University. I have been working as a Chemist and Chemistry Teacher for more than 20 years. Over my career I have instructed and tutored students in Chemistry from many different backgrounds, abilities and educational levels. Most pertinent to tutoring is my experience with ‘one-to-one’ Chemistry teaching and mentoring. In this role I have learned to patiently teach Chemistry to individuals with little or no prior subject knowledge and I am happy to tailor my teaching and mentoring to meet their specific academic level and way of learning. As such, I am completely aware of the diverse range of individual learning styles and the need to accordingly adapt my teaching style, particularly for individuals who struggle with the subject matter and are not naturally drawn to it.

Matt was a great tutor. He helped me catch up on where I had fallen behind in my Chemistry class. Now, I am able to understand everything on my own from here on out.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Chemistry B.S. from UC Berkeley, a PhD from Columbia University and have taken many basic and advanced Organic Chemistry courses. In addition, I have been performing Chemistry R&D for the last 20 years which always includes a large amount of organic, inorganic and organometallic synthetic chemistry. As such, I am very well versed in Organic Chemistry and can tutor it well and comfortably.
