Hello! I'm a graduate of MIT, have an MBA from the University of Chicago and a Masters in Economics from San Francisco State University. I teach Micro and Macro economics at San Francisco State University and the University of San Francisco. When I was at MIT and the University of Chicago I was exposed to some of the world's best economics teachers - Milton Friedman and Paul Samuelson - but at that time I had no interest in economics. My passion for economics developed later in life as I observed people, institutions and society often making decisions at odds with the intended or unintended consequences of the options. Because of this experience I decided to focus my efforts on helping people understand economics and the "economic way of thinking". My goal is to have students understand the principles at the core of economics so they can handle standard as well as unfamiliar problems. Merely memorizing formulas lets you down when confronted with a problem that is a little different from what you have seen before. At the same time I want them to focus on thoroughly knowing key relationships and definitions so they do not waste time trying to remember them during a test.

I love economics and hope to show students that economics is fun and relevant to virtually every decision they (or anyone else) will ever make.

Macroeconomics

I studied economics at MIT as an undergraduate and later at The University of Chicago as part of my MBA. During my career as a technology executive, I used economic thinking to manage and plan businesses. My interest in economics and a desire to see more people understand it motivated me to go back to school after a career in high technology for a Masters in Economics. I've tutored high school and college students in micro and macro economics and currently teach at two Bay area universities.

Super thoughtful

Joel is one of the best tutors I've had, and really helps me to think through problems. He's great at explaining the concepts, and answers all of my questions thoroughly.

A Truly Great Experience

Joel was, in a word, incredible. I sent him problems that I didn't understand ahead of each lesson which, by the time we met, he had thoroughly solved so that he was able to help me through them step by step. Due to my own busy schedule, we met on Skype but this didn't affect his teaching ability at all. He always had a clear explanation for everything, extra sample problems if I needed them, and was more than happy to prepare an explanation on a topic that I didn't understand before proceeding to explain it until I did. While I have taken Economics at both the High School and University level, his patient and detailed explanations proved to be just the ticket, never giving me too much information so much as to confuse me nor too little to leave me in the dark. He was knowledgable and was always able to apply his answers to my questions with a real world example, making them that much more relatable. I would highly recommend Joel to any student studying Economics that wants someone passionate about the subject and capable of turning that passion into a logical explanation. Working with Joel was a truly great experience and has left me feeling much more confident in my skills as an economist.

Effective and approachable teaching!

Joel and I reviewed materials for my upcoming graduate Micro Economics mid-term. He helped me digest concepts with approachable language, reviewing topics I was confused by, and putting subject matter in terms I could understand. Very helpful!
