About Claire

Looking for Art Lessons this Summer?
I am an experienced teacher and artist. I am a painter and recently received my Master of Fine Arts degree at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston through the Tufts University/SMFA graduate program.
I have over five years experience teaching art to students K - 12 both in school programs and privately. I am a professional oil painter, and routinely exhibit my work, I also work as a freelance illustrator.
My teaching style is energetic, fun and laid-back; I look for creative ways to teach challenging concepts. I have a great deal of experience giving private art lessons. I understand and take into account an individual student's needs, strengths and goals.

As a graduate student I served as a Teaching Assistant for a graduate level course focused on Contemporary Art and Art Theory and gave presentations both on Art Theory and classical painting and drawing techniques. I concentrate on an art historically based curriculum and work with students to achieve their goals. I have excellent technical skills in a variety of media. I am able to tutor students in figure drawing, portraiture, landscape, still life and abstract work and color studies. I am familiar with the Studio and Art History AP exams as well as College Admissions Portfolio Reviews and can help students to build a portfolio and work on crafting an artist's statement.

I am fluent in French and I have tutored in French conversation, comprehension and writing. The lower school where I taught is a multi-lingual school where French is taught starting in Pre-K giving me experience with teaching French at all levels. I majored in French at Skidmore College and spent my Junior year living and studying in Paris, France. This experience allowed me to become fluent in French, speaking it with ease as well as writing and reading it expertly.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art History

I have a lot of experience studying Art History. As a high school student I received a 5 on the Art History AP examination. I studied Western Art History, Medieval Art History and French Art and Architecture as a college student. As an MFA student I took graduate level art history courses at the Tufts University Art History department. There I studied contemporary Art, 19th century British and American Art and 20th century art.

Art Theory

My Master of Fine Arts degree required that I do extensive reading and study of Art Theory. I took courses on 20th century and contemporary art, covering theory relating to Expressionism, Cubism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Modernism, Minimalism and Conceptual Art. I am able to apply the history and theory of these movements to Art History as well as the Art being made and shown in museums and galleries today.

Drawing

Drawing is my artistic foundation; it was my favorite pursuit as a child and formed the bulk of my formal studies. At Skidmore College my Studio Art major was concentrated in drawing. I have extensive experience in life drawing (drawing from the figure); during my year abroad in Paris I took studied it at the École des Beaux Arts.
I am familiar with portraiture, landscape, still life, illustration, and abstraction as well with all the techniques and media traditionally used in drawing (pencil, charcoals, pastels, ink etc.).
I have taught art to students of all ages both in classrooms and one-on-one, most recently at a private school in Chestnut Hill. There, I taught students K-3 the fundamentals of painting and drawing. Previously, I taught summer art classes for students who were pre-K through 6th grade. I have also done individual art lessons for Middle and High School students. I am familiar with the Studio Art AP exam and its portfolio requirements and I am able to help build and select a portfolio for students applying to college. As I also tutor in writing, I can help you or your student develop and perfect an Artist’s Statement.

Elementary (K-6th)

For the past year and a half I have been teaching Pre K and Kindergarten students in an Extended Day program at a school in Chestnut Hill. For the last academic year I was also the part time Pre K classroom aide, assisting the primary teacher several days a week. At the Extended Day program I’ve also worked with 1st-5th grade students. I’ve helped students with reading, writing, math, science and history. I have a lot of experience with students whose first language is not English.
Within the Extended Day program I also taught a weekly art elective for students K-3. As a Lower School substitute teacher I supervised dismissal, gave support in music and drama classes, taught ESL, and gave support for sports electives.
In the past I also taught art classes for students who were pre-K through 6th grade at a summer art program in Philadelphia. There, I taught each of the grade levels daily, transitioning easily from students who had not yet started school to those about to begin middle school.

ESL/ESOL

I'm experienced with teaching students whose first language is not English. I can tutor in conversation, reading and writing. I've had beginner English students as well as bilingual students. I'm experienced with a variety of native languages (Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Mandarin).

French

I am fluent in French and I have tutored in French conversation, comprehension and writing. The school where I teach is a multilingual school where French is taught starting in Pre-K giving me experience with teaching French at all levels. I majored in French at Skidmore College, where I was a member of the National French Honor Society, and spent my Junior year living and studying in Paris, France. In France, I studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts and the Université de Paris X at Nanterre. This experience allowed me to become fluent in French, speaking it with ease as well as writing and reading it expertly.

Painting

I am a painter; I recently graduated from the MFA program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston/ Tufts University joint program. I began painting in High School and have studied it and maintained a Studio Practice since that time. I studied painting at Skidmore College and at the Académie de Port Royal in Paris. There I became acquainted with a variety of techniques and styles including painting from life, landscape and still life. After graduating from college, I dedicated five years to painting. I showed throughout Boston as well as in Philadelphia, New Jersey, California and Seattle.
My current body of work concentrates on the idea of landscape painting and the human relationship to nature. I am familiar with portraiture, abstraction, landscape, still life, and illustration. I am skilled in all traditional painting techniques and media; I can help students to develop skill in oil paint, acrylic, watercolor, gouache and tempera. I can teach you how to prepare painting surfaces and set up a palette.
