About Shane

I'm a former Khan Academy and current Fitbit software engineer, and I love computer science! I specialize in teaching interview prep for coding bootcamps, especially Hack Reactor.

I can teach both theory as well as more applied web development. I'm strongest in HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Python. I'm proficient in the latest programming tools as well. See my "Technical Skills" section below for details.

I'm an experienced tutor as well. I've worked as an onsite tutor at Drew School in Pacific Heights, and I've tutored students from other San Francisco high schools including St. Ignatius, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Lowell, and Urban. I've spent hundreds of hours tutoring dozens of students to figure out how students succeed, and what helps parents to support their kids academically. My students routinely increase their grades by a letter or more.

Currently, I'm only taking on students who need computer science tutoring and can be tutored remotely. Remote tutoring for computer science is a great option because we can screen share and pair program. Most major tech companies have teams that collaborate remotely. I've also tutored a significant number of students remotely, and they've found it equal to in-person tutoring. The one caveat is that this method of tutoring doesn't work as well for students with learning differences.

Email me if you're interested in tutoring!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

My math education includes algebra, geometry, algebra 2, precalculus, Calculus AB (high school), and one semester of college Calculus (limits, derivatives, integrals).

My qualifications include:
- my above education
- score of 650 on the math section of the SAT
- score of "4" on the Calculus AB AP exam
- 3.9 high school GPA from Bellarmine College Preparatory
- 3.6 college GPA from the University of Southern California.

Biology

I earned a 3.5 science GPA from USC and specialize in Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Physiology.

Computer Programming

I've worked as a software engineer intern at Khan Academy and am currently a software engineer at Fitbit. I have strong experience programming a variety of features for high traffic websites. I love sharing this knowledge with others.

Computer Science

In my programming classes at Stanford, my intensive coding bootcamp at Hack Reactor, and my own self learning, I've learned the fundamentals of CS: data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and more. As evidenced by my employment at Fitbit and Khan Academy, I've learned these fundamentals well. I can teach you the fundamentals of CS either for AP CS or interview prep.

ESL/ESOL

I've taught English to all levels of proficiency, both one-on-one and through seminars (up to 10 people at once).

Whether you're just learning English or nearly fluent, I can help you. For people who want to learn how to speck in English for practical reasons such as a recent move to the U.S., we focus on learning the most common words and phrases first, conversation skills, and memorization techniques. Grammar is a secondary concern, because the goal is to get you having conversations as fast as possible.

If you're in school, we design a lesson plan according to your needs. Maybe you need to memorize vocabulary faster. Or perhaps you're having trouble with a particular grammatical concept. Then we go from there.

Geography

I've always enjoyed Geography in school, and I still read almanacs and atlases for fun. I can teach you powerful memory techniques to learn names and places, and have fun doing it.

JavaScript

At Hack Reactor, I learned full stack JavaScript with the latest tools - Angular, Node, MongoDB, Express, and D3. At Khan Academy, I programmed in jQuery when I was using JavaScript. At the same time, I've built several apps in JavaScript for my side projects.

Public Speaking

I am skilled in writing speeches, speaking in front of groups of all sizes (I've spoken in front of hundreds of people at once), and improvisational speaking. I've been winning speech contests and debate contests since I was 8 years old. I love to speak!

Many aspects go into making someone a great speaker, and I can help you with as many of them as you need to achieve your goals. As a client with me, we work on your mental, physical, and psychological abilities. You learn techniques to improve in each area, and receive constant feedback to make the dramatic improvements you desire. I'm excited to help you become the confident and competent speaker you've always wanted to be!

Python

I used a fair amount of Python at Khan Academy, mostly Webapp2 and Flask. Lately, I've been using Flask for some side projects. I also have implemented some data structures and famous algorithms in python for fun.

Spanish

With a minor in Spanish from USC and 6 months spent living abroad in Peru and Spain, I can help you with everything you need to become a fluent Spanish speaker including grammar, practical speaking and listening skills, and memory techniques to learn and recall foreign vocabulary.

Study Skills

School was easy for me up until college, when I was a pre-med Neuroscience major. I quickly learned that in order to succeed, it was not enough to study the material; I had to master the material. I had to learn study systems and find out which worked best for me to get the grades that I wanted.

In my neuroscience classes, I also learned more about how we learn, store, and recall information. I learned why certain study systems work better than others.

I will work with you to design the best study system for you that allows you to master your subject more quickly and more easily.

Web Design

Through my experience at Hack Reactor, Khan Academy, and my side projects, I've gained a solid understanding of both the theory and tools behind production-quality web design. As a full stack programmer, I can touch all parts of the stack. I can help you with both theory and implementation of a website.

Writing

I earned a perfect score of an 800 on the writing section on the SAT, and I've always enjoyed writing. I can help you with essay structure, style, and grammar.
