Pomona College (Neuroscience)
Background: I am interested in helping young students excel at and enjoy their studies by sharing my passion for academics with them. As a graduate of Pomona College (ranked #1 in "America's Top Colleges" by Forbes; I graduated with a 3.7 cumulative GPA and two B.A. degrees in Neuroscience and Dance), I am a motivated, hard working, dependable person who enjoys helping students excel in their studies. I am personable and have good communication skills, and would be comfortable instructing a variety of subjects.
Experience: In 2009, I was employed at C2 Education, where I tutored students in grades K-12 in reading, writing, math (elementary through pre-calculus), science (chemistry, biology), SAT/ACT prep (all subjects), and SSAT/ISEE prep. I have also been employed as a private tutor for students in Honors Chemistry, Algebra II, pre-calculus, psychology, and SAT and ACT test preparation. I have completed almost 200 hours of tutoring via WyzAnt from October 2011 - May 2013, when I took a two-year hiatus to start the Doctorate in Physical Therapy program at UCSF. I am entering my third and final year at UCSF with a 3.9 cumulative GPA and have become an expert at efficient and effective studying!
Currently, I have available almost any day of the week after school and on weekends, with some daytime availability for college students. My graduate school schedule is a bit irregular from week to week; however, I know the schedule far in advance and am very skilled at scheduling multiple commitments. I live in Laurel Heights and attend classes at UCSF Parnassus, Mission Bay, and at SFSU, so I would prefer to meet students at or near any of these locations. I have access to UCSF and SFSU libraries and can reserve quiet study rooms at any of these locations. In my experience, a weekly 60-minute lesson is usually sufficient, with biweekly sessions as needed before exams or for short-term standardized test prep.
Students must provide instructional materials (i.e. textbooks, worksheets, test prep books, homework from school, etc.). My methodology for tutoring involves allowing the student to express their difficulty with the subject material, while also guiding the student to clearer ways of understanding and preparing for exams through discussion, practice problems, and breaking down complex topics into simpler steps. I will focus on the material that the student is responsible for comprehending, while also demonstrating effective study habits that the student can apply to their studies in general.
I would welcome the opportunity to put my skills and love for academics to work, and I look forward to further discussing my qualifications with you. I could tell at "hello" that she was the right fit for us. Articulate, personable, intelligent AND a very good teacher. She went right to work with my son's algebra lessons and knew exactly where to start and what to ask. I gave them privacy through most of the lesson, but I could tell by listening in on the first 10 minutes and the last 10 minutes that in one session she'd already helped my son. I know that this will greatly improve his math scores and probably help with his other study habits as well. Thank you Alissa!
Thanks for the awesome feedback, Victoria!
She was able to come at the last minute for my son. She spent time explaining concepts to him. Also, Alissa wrote he had to do after the lesson. She made feel confident.
Thanks for your feedback, Jean! I'm glad I was able to help your son prepare for his biology exam.
My daughter loves to work with Alissa. Not only doing a complete SAT preparation but also engaging her in college aspirations. She is a great support for my daughter. Great role model!!
Alissa promptly responded to my request and had to availability to assist my daughter with a test she had the day after the tutor session. She was friendly, patient, and knowledgeable. I appreciate having her as an option for any future test crisis we may experience! THANK YOU ALISSA!
Alissa is moving and unable to continue with my Daughter. Alissa is an amazing tutor, my daughter loved her from the being and did excellent on her work. I would recommend Alissa any time. Good luck Alissa.
Alissa is an excellent tutor. She is able to quickly identify the student’s learning obstacles. She makes recommendations on improving study methods, recognizing important points, and applying new skills to improve test scores. She is very knowledgeable, patient and a good communicator. She always arrives on time and is flexible with our son’s schedule. Alissa has tutored our son for the past two years. Before Alissa’s help, my son was struggling to get a “C” in Biology and with her help he was able to achieve a B+. When our son began this year with Oceanography and Psychology, we immediately contacted Alissa. Once again, with her assistance, our son’s grades have improved to an A-. Thank you Alissa!
Thank you! It was a pleasure working with your son, I wish him the best of luck in his future studies! Happy holidays.
Alissa has a gift of communicating on complex topics. She has done a wonderful job with our daughter. She's also very warm and kind.
Thank you so much, Mr. D! It was nice to finally meet you.
Thank you so much for your time with my daughter. She understood the lesson very well. We will keep in touch for future.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
With a degree in neuroscience, I have taken Genetics, Cellular, Environmental/Ecologic, and Animal Behavior Biology courses, as well as extensive Anatomy and Physiology for my doctorate in physical therapy. I've done coursework in just about every sub-topic in biology, and I find it to be one of the most fascinating science subjects.
I recall how challenging Chemistry was when I first took it in high school. Learning chemistry is akin to learning a completely new language. Because I received strong fundamentals of chemistry early on, I was able to succeed in General and Organic Chemistry at Pomona College, one of the top liberal arts colleges in the nation. I enjoy instilling an understanding and appreciation for chemistry in high school and college students, whether it is their first science class or a college course needed to achieve a dream of becoming a doctor or scientist.
I have a lot of experience tutoring geometry, and it was my favorite math class in high school. I've tutored students who are taking it earlier, on time, or later than their peers, and I understand it's difficulty because it is the first math class to introduce deductive reasoning, an incredibly useful skill.
In high school, I got a 720 on the SAT Math section without studying. Although math comes naturally to me, I also understand and can teach it in a methodological way that helps students focus only on what is relevant to this test to help them achieve scores that will open doors to greater college opportunities.
