About Eduardo

I am a qualified tutor because I recently graduated from University of Chicago in philosophy and am eager to translate lofty ideas into digestible, everyday language. For thousands of hours, I have helped dozens of students improve their grades, test scores, study habits and confidence.

As a tutor with Stanford's Phoenix Scholars and the YMCA, I helped students from socio-economic groups that are underrepresented in higher education. We improved homework and study skills, and tackled the enigma of college admissions. Moreover, I have worked both with big tutoring companies, learning their expensive secrets, and independently, so that I have the freedom to teach at the pace of each student--not a curriculum. Over the last few years, I have primarily tutored high school and college students, helping them prepare for tests like the SAT and GRE, to select and apply to colleges and to build the study skills and confidence to eventually continue to succeed without a tutor.

My academic strengths include reading comprehension, writing, test strategy, philosophy, computer science and history. I am also comfortable tutoring some science and math (e.g., algebra, geometry, pre-calculus and calculus). I have tutored the SAT, GRE and GMAT. I am confident I can be a good tutor because I am sincerely committed to and believe in education. I look forward to bringing the skills which made me a successful student to the chalkboard, sharing them with my students while I continue to learn as well.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

During two of my years at college, I worked with the Office of Admissions at UChicago as a student representative on a prospective student advisory committee (PSAC).

In my position on PSAC, I corresponded with students considering UChicago. I recalled my own experience as a prospective student, my anxieties as well as my successes, and sought to connect with the students. By speaking with many prospective students for two years, I broadened my understanding of college admissions generally and better understood the character of particular universities and the students who comprise them. I offered prospective students friendship along with more tangible assistance, such as information about their schools of interest; their prospects of admission; insight into financial aid; and whether UChicago's distinctive academic culture fit the students and their college plans.

As a tutor, I have helped students choose which colleges to apply to and showed them how to complete their applications and essays so that the applications both are targeted to the unique culture of each college and highlight the strengths of the student.

After graduating from college, I earned GRE scores of 164V/158Q, placing me in the top 3% of test-takers

SAT Math

As a senior in high school I earned SAT scores of 740CR/690M, placing me in the top 3% of test-takers.

As a tutor, I have led 87% of my SAT students to score increases of at least 100 total points and 40% to score increases of more than 200 total points. According to the CollegeBoard website, only about 4% of students improve their SAT scores by at least 100 points.

Eduardo has been a Godsend to our family — My son has never been interested in school or studying, and refused my suggestions of a tutor. Finally, he accepted that offer and we met Eduardo. Since that day, my son has been astonishingly dedicated to his homework, and never once has complained about the time spent with Eduardo. Eduardo has cultivated an unusual respect and friendship with my son with his gentle, confident and remarkably a ...
