As a math major preparing to be a teacher, I am an experienced and effective tutor. I enjoy tutoring all math subjects to calculus II (including statistics). Also physics in mechanics and all SAT Math preparation. I placed 17th (7-way tie) of over 2000 students nationally in the AMATYC math contest in Spring '12. Also 13th (5-way tie) in Spring '11 and 20th in Fall '11 + Spring '12 scores.
I was the assistant coach for the middle school program Mathcounts in '06-'07 and '09-'10 at different schools in San Francisco, one year having the first place team at the chapter competition. I helped with prep for the challenging AMC 10 & 12 and AIME high school tests in '09 and '10. Since middle school, I've informally helped other students with classwork in my math and science classes, which has added greatly to my tutoring experience.
I feel that I can identify each student's academic needs and adapt my tutoring to be the most productive for him/her. I am receptive to students' questions and can normally understand the confusion and give satisfying answers. I'm patient and able to explain the same concept/theorem in a variety of ways. I think students are relaxed around me and enjoy my sense of humor while tutoring. I can tutor (and teach) material thoroughly, helping students understand why facts are true. This understanding helps you remember them much better than by rote memorization. I try to help students not only understand the concepts and material but also see the beauty of math and physics. If you become truly interested in the material you are learning this naturally enables you to focus better, ask meaningful questions, and remember the material. It's great when I see a student overcome difficulty & anxiety about math and begin to succeed & gain confidence in his/her ability in it.

Laurens was a tutor for my son who attended Lowell. He helped him with his AP Statistics and AP Calculus class as well as preparing for the AP tests.
He had a flexible schedule and came to our house but was also available at other locations and we recommended him to other friends as well. He is very patient, reliable, and knowledgeable and was great to work with. I quit worrying about my son's math class after we found Laurens.
Laurens is a remarkable Calculus tutor. He has the required ability to simplify complex problems that at first look daunting. He was very committed in making sure I did well in the course and went above and beyond in helping me with the course load. For example: I emailed Laurens a dozen homework problems that I had been stuck on the night before the solutions were due, and within an hour, I received a step-by-step process on how to solve each problem! Exceptional.
Laurens has been the most amazing tutor. I had great problems taking statistics in my community college but he helped me succeed with his genuine care,patience, and love for mathematics. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took Calculus I at CCSF in Fall 2006 and received an A for the class (CCSF class grades do not have +'s or -'s). I received a perfect score on the final. I took Calculus II at CCSF in Spring 2007 and received an A for that class. I enjoy the real analysis aspect of calculus, including precise definitions of limits, definition of power with irrational exponent, and functions of rational numbers. Also origin of e and transcendental topic infinite series. I have the 5th edition of the Stewart textbook, an excellent book used by many schools, and the student solutions manual 5th edition. I also enjoy the fact that as complicated as calculus is mathematically, many of its concepts and theorems are intuitively clear, such as continuity & differentiability, IVT, MVT, extrema, and some infinite series tests. These aid in teaching to students.
Although I truly love all math subjects I have studied, in many ways geometry is my favorite high school math subject. It is the only one learned as a deductive system (starting with undefined terms and defining all others from them, and postulates and proving all theorems from them). This is the way mathematicians do all areas of math. Basic logical reasoning and methods of proof (deductive, indirect, and possibly mathematical induction) are also great parts of the class. Since geometry works on sets of points that can be easily understood visually, and thus many geometric theorems are immediately visually obvious, it is in a way understandable for a higher proportion of students than other math subjects. It's great that many students who don't love studying other math subjects love studying geometry. I have the '82 edition of the famous Moise / Downs textbook (virtually the same as the '90 edition), an outstanding book full of excellent problems, which is used by some schools.
