About Lauren

I am an experienced and effective English and Writing tutor with a certification in English as a Second Language from UC Berkeley. Over the past 8 years, I have worked with a variety of students ages 7 to adult to improve writing and communication skills, and have taught ESL classes at language schools in San Francisco and Vietnam. I am currently available to assist students via e-mail or video chat. I will provide personalized lessons to help you improve writing organization and clarity, grammar use, pronunciation and speaking skills. I also offer proofreading and editing services.

Please keep reading to learn more about my background!

During my time as an undergrad at UC Santa Barbara I demonstrated excellent skills in writing and communication, which led me to be employed as a Writing Tutor at the university Campus Learning Assistance Services. I worked there from 2008 to 2010, when I graduated (BA in Comparative Religion, with honors and a 3.77 GPA). As a tutor I worked with a variety of UCSB undergraduates each day with writing assignments in a wide range of subjects, styles, and ability levels during half hour to hour private sessions. I quickly evaluated student needs, skills, and learning styles, and instructed in the manner best suited for each individual. Some of the topics covered include organization, clarity, grammar, sentence structure, thesis formation and paper development. Many of the students spoke English as a second language.

My enthusiasm for this work prompted me to continue tutoring after I moved to San Francisco. I was a private tutor for middle school and high school students, college students, and adult learners. I assisted them one-on-one, focusing on comprehension of material, homework completion and test preparation in the areas of writing, English, history, basic science, Pre-Algebra and Algebra, Geometry, and English as a second language. In 2013 I earned my certification to teach English as a Second Language from UC Berkeley and began teaching adults ESL classes at a private language school. There, I had the pleasure to teach students from all over the world who came to the US to study! They inspired me to have my own travel adventure, and in 2015 I moved to Vietnam. At the Vietnamese school I taught a variety of classes from ages 7-12, teens, and adults. These classrooms were very fun and dynamic, and I learned a lot about students learning styles, effective and creative lesson planning, and new approaches to teaching.

Today, I seek to continue my passion for teaching and traveling by using online tools to reach students. I am currently traveling in South East Asia, and can work with students via email and skype.

Through my academic and personal experiences, I have developed a deep appreciation for the value of a good education, and I am passionate about providing that education to everyone. As a tutor, I supplement classroom education in a vital way by giving students the personal attention they need to truly learn. My style is to go beyond simply helping students with completing their homework and passing their tests. What is more important is getting students to really understand and appreciate their material. It is not enough to just memorize the rules of grammar or mathematics, but to understand them so that they can be used more effectively and more creatively.

I believe in working with each student in a customized way that fits their individual needs and builds their confidence. It is important to emphasize the progress a student makes, in addition to what they still need to work on. In my experience, when students realize what they have accomplished they also realize that they are capable of achieving much more than they thought they could. My goal is to provide a supportive, enjoyable, and focused learning environment where students can have that realization. To me, there is nothing that feels more rewarding or exciting than seeing a student light up when they grasp a concept, or quickly work through material that they struggled with two weeks prior.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have been an algebra tutor for 2 years, working with middle school, high school, and college students to improve their skills. This is one of my strongest teaching areas, as well as one of the most fun. My students often compliment me on the clarity of my explanations. I have many math books and works books, so I am able to help students with their assigned work as well as provide extra materials if needed.

English

When I first began work as a tutor in 2008, it was in the area of English and writing. It is still one of the most fun and important subjects to teach. I have worked with students of a variety of ability levels to improve their writing (at any stage in the process), analysis, comprehension, and communication of ideas.

ESL/ESOL

English as a Second Language is my specialty. I've tutored numerous students from many different countries to help them improve their English speaking, reading, and writing. After earning my TESL certification from UC Berkeley in 2013, I taught ESL to adult students for one year in San Francisco. Then, I moved to Vietnam, and spent one year teaching at a private language school where I worked with students age 8-12, teens, and adults in dynamic classroom environments.

With all this experience, I am very good at planning interesting and helpful lessons, explaining difficult concepts, and designing lessons to fit the needs of each individual student.

Grammar

With an extensive background in English, writing, and English as a Second Language, I have a great command of grammar and can help both native and non-native speakers improve their grammar for more effective communication.

Prealgebra

I have been tutoring basic math, pre-algebra, and algebra 1 for two years now, with students in 4th-10th grade. I am an enthusiastic and effective tutor. My students often compliment me on my clarity and thorough explanations, and all of them have raised their grades significantly.

Proofreading

With my extensive background in writing, English, and grammar, I can help both native and non-native English speakers proofread and edit their writing before using it for school or work.

Writing

Writing is one of my favorite subjects to teach, and one of the most important for your success in school and work. I began my career in education as a university writing tutor, and since then have helped numerous students in college and high school who need to improve their abilities. I like to focus on organization, clarity of ideas, and using correct grammar to effectively communicate your message. I have worked with countless students in this area, so I can tailor lessons to your specific needs. My extensive background in English as a Second Language has given me a deeper insight into the mechanics of this language. I can help both native and non-native speakers develop stronger writing.
