Hello! I'm Emily.
I am a 2010 graduate of Washington State University, with a B.A. in French language and a B.A. in Political Science. I recently completed my M.A. in International Studies at the University of San Francisco. I began tutoring beginning and intermediate level French students during my sophomore year of college. I also taught several 1 semester French conversation classes beginning in 2008. I studied for a year in Bordeaux, France, where I experienced complete language immersion. There, I attended the Institute of Political Science of Bordeaux, where all courses and assignments were conducted in French.
I also spent three months in Benin, West Africa interning at an NGO during the summer of 2011. There, I experienced a different kind of French immersion which helped to refresh my fluency.
Though most of my tutoring experience has been with high school and college-aged students, I am comfortable teaching any age group. It is helpful to me if you have a curriculum already prepared that I may use as a guide for what you need to learn.
I find that the fact that I am a native speaker of English is helpful when tutoring because I am able to identify with the perspective of the student. I will have made the same mistakes as the student at one point, after all! Among my favorite methods are engaging in conversation, making word associations using images and objects and practicing grammar through lots of repetition. People describe me as enthusiastic and personable. I love the feeling gratification after a student has demonstrated his or her new-found skills!
Other than French, I feel qualified to tutor reading and writing, as these have been my forte throughout all of my schooling. I received a 750 on the writing section of the SAT, so if test preparation is what you need, I may be of service. I minored in Spanish as well and feel comfortable tutoring strictly on an elementary level.
Thank you and good luck finding the tutor for you! Hello! I'm Emily.

Our daughter has only been working with Emily for a few weeks, and already the tutoring has made a huge difference in her test results in French. Prior to working with Emily, she was scoring in the 30s on her exams and so far her test results have improved to the 70s and 80s. We couldn't be happier! And it is great to see her enjoying French for the first time.
My freshman finds sessions with Emily very helpful and relevant to her classwork. She is very supportive and patient for the beginning French student, and I'm told she creates a good rapport with this high school student. Emily has been very punctual in meeting at our school for all scheduled sessions on days she is available.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
