About Janice

I am a musician and love teaching kids how to read music, play, and sing! I play the piano and the flute and can teach both instruments.

I love teaching TK, Kinder, 1st, and 2nd graders because it is very important for them to get their basic skills down. It's important to catch them early, if they are struggling. I can also help refine the skills that 3-5th graders are learning. My strength is writing.

I worked for two years with a Speech Pathologist, and I specialize in teaching younger children with speech/language difficulties pre-reading skills, beginning reading skills, and writing skills. I use phonics to teach reading, however, I understand that there are other ways children learn to read, and use a mixture of methods and materials to teach reading. I have also worked with children who have special needs such as autism and Asperger's syndrome.

I have been working with children for many years in many different venues, including churches, public schools, and private schools. I am a very enthusiastic teacher who uses art, music, and fun to help children learn.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

I worked for 2 years in a Language Delayed Classroom. In that classroom, we had autistic children. I have a certificate of completion from a seminar where I heard Temple Grandin speak, and went to various workshops. One year ago, I had an high-functioning autistic child in my classroom. She had one-on-one aides who came each day to help her. I have experience in helping children with autistic tendencies.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have had a multiple subjects teaching credential since 1981. I had to pass the National Teacher Exam and the CBEST test before receiving my teaching credential. I have 14 years experience in classroom teaching as the regular teacher. I have 20 years experience subbing in the public school district. I graduated with a 4.0 from Cal State LA when I received my CA State Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential.

Elementary Science

I take a hands-on approach to teaching Science. I love to do experiments and make sure the children have more than book-learning. A step-by-step process is often what it takes to help a child understand those more abstract concepts.

Flute

I have been playing flute for about 50 years. I have played in numerous orchestras and bands. I taught music fundamentals at Bonita Unified School District for 20 years, as a substitute teacher. I also taught music appreciation at Citrus College for 26 years.

General Music

I have been playing piano for 53 years. I have played flute for 50 years. I played in numerous orchestras and bands. I taught music appreciation at Citrus College for 26 years.

Handwriting

I have been teaching penmanship and printing to young children for at least 35 years. I have several different ways to help. There is the "head line, tummy line, and toe line" way. Then, you can color code the lines with markers---red, yellow, and green. And then, there are songs to help the children understand going from the top to the bottom. I can use whichever method the child needs to help him/her learn!

Phonics

I have taught TK, Kindergarten, 1st Grade and 3rd Grade. I also taught Preschool Language Delayed Children, where we emphasized sounds phonemic awareness. I am familiar with multiple curricula, including Houghton Mifflin, Reading Dynamics, Macmillian, Abekah, and many more. I most recently worked with a Kindergarten teacher, helping ELL children to read. I worked one on one with the children with a highly phonetic reading series. I also passed the CLAD Certification Test which included an entire section on Phonemic Awareness.

Piano

I have been playing the piano for 53 years. I have accompanied myself while leading singing with people via the Life Long Learning Center for 26 years through Citrus College. I have accompanied several vocal groups and children's programs on the piano. I have taught piano lessons to a few children.

Reading

I have been teaching beginning reading for years. I believe in a balanced approach to teaching reading. Phonics is most important when teaching beginning reading. However, speaking, listening, and writing skills are also very important. Comprehension is very important, once the reading skills take off. A balanced approach speaks to acquisition of all of these skills. I know how to teach beginning and ending sounds, as well as digraphs and blends. I know games and strategies to help struggling readers. Since I have been teaching reading for years, I know that I can help those who need extra help!

Study Skills

Teaching organizational skills is something I can do, because I am very organized. Because of teaching so many grades and classrooms, as well as working at Citrus College, I believe I am highly qualified to help younger children to be organized and to study better. I believe that my multiple years of teaching would qualify me to help children know how to study.

Voice (Music)

I took voice lessons for 3 years. I took music lessons for 10 years. I have been singing in front of groups for 50 years in choirs and choral groups. I have led vocal groups in school districts, as well as churches for at least 30 years. I sang in front of groups for 26 years while leading people at the Life Long Learning Center at Citrus College.
