Bio

Hi! My name is Min! I'm currently a 4th year Mechanical Engineering major. For roughly 7 years, I’ve tutored a plethora of different subjects, the most common being Math (Jr. High → College), test-prep (ACT/SAT), and English. (check my profile for the rest!). A quick background: I've gotten a perfect score (36 and 1600) on both the ACT and SAT 3 and 2 times respectively, graduated in the top 1% of my class (with a 4.0 GPA), and have been a university tutor for the past 3 years (which requires...

Hi! My name is Min! I'm currently a 4th year Mechanical Engineering major. For roughly 7 years, I’ve tutored a plethora of different subjects, the most common being Math (Jr. High → College), test-prep (ACT/SAT), and English. (check my profile for the rest!). A quick background: I've gotten a perfect score (36 and 1600) on both the ACT and SAT 3 and 2 times respectively, graduated in the top 1% of my class (with a 4.0 GPA), and have been a university tutor for the past 3 years (which requires a 3.5+ college GPA!).

I start all my sessions with a free diagnostic session, and tutoring-wise, I generally stay true to 2 standards of tutoring:

1) 'PERFECT' PRACTICE
When faced with difficult concepts, students often decide to re-study everything when it really is just one specific topic they have trouble with. This isn’t efficient, since ½ their time is spent on things they already know. As a tutor well-versed in all the subjects on my profile, I am able to diagnose where you are in your understanding, allowing me to assign you problems that will specifically target your academic weaknesses and gaps in your understanding!

2) STRATEGY
Countless students have come to me with exam scores that aren’t reflective of their understanding of the material. As I’ve earned high scores on a variety of exams, I know that exam strategies are as important as an understanding of the material itself. I’ll teach you to effectively tackle problems in a way that is advantageous to you, both time-wise and in terms of your mental capacity. You’ll learn the skills you need to masterfully weave through all of a test's distractions and to always maximize your score, even when you’re about out of time or aren't completely sure of your answer. All of my students who have come to me for ACT/SAT tutoring have seen at least a 5 point (ACT) or 250 point (SAT) increase in their scores, and most end up in the 34-36 (ACT) or 1480-1600 (SAT) range.

Common Core

Though most of my fundamentals in most subjects find themselves based on traditional styles of learning, the Common Core method of teaching subjects was introduced to most high schools in my area rather early. Needless to say, I am expertly familiar with this style of teaching, and I have tutored many (most, since this is now the standard) students with the Common-Core style curriculum. Common Core style instruction requires a more delicate touch when learning subjects, as learning objectives are defined through standards, rather than just a list of topics being checked off as they're taught. As an engineering major, most problems I have worked with involve those kinds of problems that require the ability to critically think, and use multiple different concepts to solve a single problem. I am readily comfortable with this style of teaching, and I am confident I can guide any student who needs assistance adapting/learning through this style of instruction!

College Counseling

As a high school student, I was extremely active in my application to a number of prestigious colleges. I've written almost 30 different essays for the CommonApp, UC PIQ's, all the IVY leagues, and other private colleges, both domestic and abroad. I was a QuestBridge scholarship finalist and recipient and received a scholarship worth $250,000 to any IVY league school I got accepted into. It was due to unfortunate family circumstances that I needed to stay local at UCSD for college, but even while studying here, I have assisted many students through crafting an appealing college portfolio. I've played a critical role in helping students achieve acceptance into the likes of Princeton, Stanford, UCLA, UC Berkeley, Dartmouth, Brown, and more. Whether it be crafting a compelling college essay, shifting your accomplishments to paint a better picture of who you are, suggesting certain organizations a student should be a part of, or even just answering questions on things like how finances work, I am available as a resource to anyone who requires college counseling. I look forward to working with you!

Cooking

I've cooked since I was extremely young -- I loved food and learning about how different flavors worked together and about the techniques that create those certain flavors. I've always loved experimenting with new and old cooking techniques, ranging from sous vide to blanching potatoes, to making simple purees! I'm primarily well versed when it comes to meats, with a high preference for steaks, but I am confident in my ability to cook a variety of things + teach the basics of what I know to anyone who is vying for some cooking knowledge!
