I’m Alexis! I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Computer Science from Tufts University. In college, I realized the teachers I loved the most always approached teaching with a sense of curiosity, humor and the ability to explain difficult concepts in many different ways for many different types of learners. I integrate this style into my own teaching approach, making sure I remain as engaging and comprehensible to all as possible. I am committed to my students' success, and take pride in not only watching their grades soar, but watching their comprehension and math literacy grow. I am always willing to go the extra mile when asked for additional help. If I’m doing my job right, you’ll begin to develop a sense of excitement about the wonderful world of math (and not just for homeworks sake)!

I was a math tutor for 4 years with Tufts Literacy Corps, where I worked with low-income students to improve their math comprehension. I helped my student’s improve their grades by an average of two full letters while working with them, oftentimes preventing them from being held back a year. Additionally, I was an undergraduate Teacher’s Assistant for the Tufts University Computer Science Department for multiple years, where I tutored college students in high level math and programming. Professionally, I’ve worked as a software engineer at multiple Fortune 500 companies using Python and Linux on a daily basis. But my true fulfillment comes from sharing my love of math with others!

Not only am I a mathematician, but I’m a professional guitarist too! I have been playing guitar for over a decade, and in that time I have won awards for my outstanding skill as a soloist, have sat in on gigs with multiple well-known musicians in the jazz manouche sub genre, and have taken college level classes on jazz theory, composition, and improvisation. I’m more than equipped to help you reach your guitar goals, and love to talk about music theory!

I’ve worked as a software engineer at multiple Fortune 500 companies and can definitely help you learn this material! I have a formal academic background in algorithms and data structures and a degree in Computer Science from one of the top 25 universities in the US. In addition to my professional experience as a software engineer, I was a an undergraduate TA at my computer science department. I have experience teaching exactly the concepts you’re wanting to learn.
Linux,

Linux

I worked with Linux daily as a software engineer at multiple Fortune 500 companies for years. Additionally, I taught various Linux tools to students during my time as an undergraduate TA at Tufts University. Linux is now my main hobbyist programming environment as well, and I use the Windows Subsystem for Linux whenever I simply cannot avoid using a Windows device.
Python

Python

I was employed as a full-time software engineer working in Python at multiple Fortune 500 companies before pursuing tutoring full time. I have a degree in Computer Science from Tufts University, one of the top 25 universities in the United States at the time of my graduation. I was also an undergraduate Teacher’s Assistant in the Tufts University Computer Science Department for multiple years. I also have multiple years of experience teaching the core concepts of Python to struggling students and industry professionals alike.

Algebra 1

I was an algebra tutor with Tufts Literacy Corps for multiple years. In addition, I have used algebra very frequently during my work as a professional software engineer. At this point, I have over 5 years of experience in tutoring algebra independently. The students who I have tutored have seen their grades rise by an average of 2 full letters because of their time spent working with me. I attribute this success to my back-to-basics approach for teaching math, and my ability to tailor story problems to make them relevant to my students’ individual interests and hobbies.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I worked as an algebra tutor with Tufts Literacy Corps for multiple years, and have used concepts from algebra extremely frequently in my time doing professional software engineering. I’ve tutored math for over 5 years now, and my students have seen their grades rise by an average of two full letters after working with me. I make the math I teach tailored to my students’ hobbies and passions, which makes them more motivated to learn. I also make it a point to make learning math fun - my students often leave my sessions with a smile!

I was a tutor with Tufts Literacy Corps for multiple years, and use concepts from trig on almost a daily basis when I’m doing audio engineering and mixing recorded music. I’ve been tutoring students in math for over 5 years, and my students have seen their grades increase by an average of two full letters. This is because I make learning math fun by tailoring my lessons to the passions and interests of each of my students. I’ve found that making math relevant to my students makes them interested in the topic, and gives them the motivation to practice.

I have played guitar for over a decade. In that time won an award for my improvisational jazz soloing skills. I have sat in on gigs and am on first-name basis with some very well known names in the niche "jazz manouche" community, including Jack Soref (who organizes the music festival "Django in June"), Jim Char (of the band Pearl Django), Michael Horowitz (who runs the website djangobooks.com), and Jason Anick (who is a violin professor at Berklee College of Music and a member of the Rhythm Future Quartet). I am more than equipped to teach non-professional musicians at any level of experience how to take their guitar playing to the next level, especially within the jazz idiom.

Understands the difference between “telling” and “teaching.”

Alexis is patient,, maintains an even demeanor and tone, relatable, knowledgeable, and doesn’t hesitate to use examples. Alexis emphasizes FINDING correct or useful answers, not KNOWING them. This is a highly coveted skill for programmers.

very knowledgeable tutor who wants you to learn!

Alexis patiently listened to my concern and questions about my project and broke it down for me into smaller pieces. She is very knowledgeable, which shows when she immediately pulls resources she knows after I ask a question. She introduced me to useful tools that I was never learned about in class, and really encouraged me when I feel overwhelmed with my project. She genuinley wants me to learn, and explains eveything very carefully, which set an important foundation for me to complete the project!

Absolutely Fantastic !

Alexis is a true programmer, who enjoys teaching others. A great programmer has the ability to problem solve and do it fast, but also has the ability to explain difficult concepts in layman's terms.

Need and Awesome Tutor??

I had Alexis help me with writing in the shell in Linux. As the shell can be difficult to work with Alexis helped me greatly understand what I was doing wrong and showed me the right way to clean my code up and get it to function properly. I would 100% recommend Alexis as a tutor for help. She replies in a timely manner and most of all helps you solve the problem at task. Thank you Alexis!!

Productive and very knowledgeable.

She kept us on track to make the session productive. Her instruction was clear and very helpful. We covered the basics of Python so that I have a firm foundation to build on future lessons.
