I am an educator with over 8 years experience in both private lessons and classroom instructor specializing in music composition, guitar, and audio production. I received an undergraduate degree in classical guitar performance and then went on to earn a masters and PhD in music composition. I have given numerous public performances as guitarist and also have had my instrumental and electronic compositions performed in various venues. Since 2019 I have been teaching at the Art Institute of Dallas (online currently) where I teach topics such as music theory, mixing/mastering, recording, and game audio.

I am comfortable in various musical genres, but my focus with guitar has been in the classical/rock/blues/metal traditions. Over the past 15 years I have dedicated myself more towards composition and technological aspects of audio production. This includes writing for numerous instruments as well as electronics (recordings or synthesized sounds). I also have years of experience as a sound engineer, having worked both in a recording studio and in live sound. More recently I have been interested in game audio, implementing sound and music within game engines using code or audio middleware (FMOD and Wwise).

Whether you are a complete beginner, casual hobbyist, or dedicated advanced student; I strive to deliver you meaningful content that will make you are better musician. I am personable, friendly, reliable, and have good communication skills. My home setup allows me to stream high quality audio and video (at least as much as Zoom can handle). Below is a summary of subjects I offer instruction in:

Guitar: rock/blues/metal/classical/general
Music Composition: Instrumental or Electronic
Audio Technology: Digital Audio Workstations (Pro Tools or Reaper), Mixing/Mastering, Sound Design, Game Audio

Given the current situation I prefer to give lessons online, but when things get back to normal I would love to resume in-person instruction (within the San Diego area).

Knowledgeable and patient

So patient and knowledgable. Took the tie to explain everything thoroughly, was patient with my questions and seemingly insurmountable tech issues! I would highly recommend Michael to anyone looking for a Pro Tools tutor

Great Tutor!

We talked about sound design for video games and he was able to share a lot of tips, sound libraries and other aspects that helped me get a better idea on how to be a better sound designer. Highly recommended him.

All three sessions I had with Michael were good

He listened carefully as I related my issues and my goals. Though I had initiated sessions for tutoring on Avid Protools we decided mutually that with my very basic hardware setup getting protools to work was not practical. As a composer / songwriter he was a kindred spirit and his knowledge of music notation software was an invaluable addition to his knowledge of ProTools and other DAWs.

Knowledgeable and Friendly

Michael was awesome! He walked me through some of the basics of Pro Tools. Looking forward to practicing what I learned today and setting up another lesson with him in the future to continue learning more.

Knowledgeable teacher and individualized instruction

Michael does an excellent job of covering music theory and basic skills, while also paying attention to the types of music the student enjoys and providing songs to practice that fall into that category as much as the student's skills will allow. My son has left both lessons having learned something new and eager to practice for the next week.

Very knowledgeable and patient

I had a good start with Michael. As a beginner with some basic knowledge of music theory i felt respected and motivated to step into the world of digital music production. I am looking forward to having my next lesson with Michael.
