Bio

Hi, I am Craig. I graduated with a B.S. in Accounting from San Diego State University! My strengths lie in math, finance, accounting and Excel thanks, in large part, to the great education I received. It is highly unlikely that the successes in my career could have been realized without the fantastic education I received from the Professors at SDSU!

I was lucky. SDSU's School of Accountancy was ranked #5 in the U.S. behind the likes of Harvard and Stanford. Additionally, SDSU was affordable, and located here in San Diego. My professors were both intelligent and capable, but just as importantly, they were engaging and interesting which led to greater learning. Looking back, I believe both factors were key to graduating Magna Cum Laude, which, in turn, was key to landing that coveted first job with a prestigious Big 4 CPA firm in San Diego. It is my goal to provide tutoring that will likewise help you to attain academic success resulting in a plethora of exciting options. In addition to teaching the subject matter, I will add some humor into our sessions, as well as correlations between academic principles and real world applications in business.
That first job was at Ernst and Young, (EY), where I worked for 4 years in the Audit dept. I was exposed to a wide array of advanced business and financial topics in multiple industries that very few people in their early to mid 20's have the opportunity to experience. Working at EY helped propel me directly into accounting management positions starting at age 26. Ultimately, I became the Sr Vice President of Finance for Barona Casino just as Barona experienced explosive growth following the legalization of Indian Gaming in March 2000. Within 3 years, a beautiful casino, hotel and golf course resort was constructed, and revenues quadrupled!! With growth comes opportunity. I was promoted from V.P./Controller of a 10 person Accounting dept. to Sr. Vice President of Finance. The Accounting dept. grew five-fold to 50, and I also inherited 8 more departments, bringing the total head count to 350. I also had the exciting opportunity to be involved in the development of an industry changing invention, coinless, (aka ticket-based) gaming, and was a co-author of 1 of the 4 patents that were filed. Its successful deployment resulted in Barona being named the #1 technology casino in the U.S.!
Following Barona, I became the first CFO of the 2nd largest business lender (after Wells Fargo), in San Diego County, CDC Small Business Finance. I gained important knowledge about capital infusion solutions for small businesses. That led to a fun shift in my career to providing financial consulting services to small businesses, often helping them raise needed capital. After a career working for larger companies, I was now enjoying the intrinsic rewards derived from working hands on with growing small business clients who needed financial assistance, as well as capital.
My new position focused more on leadership and coordination, including a lot of teaching. I strove to fill the many new management positions resulting from the rapid growth, via promotions to young, ambitious internal candidates through teaching. The satisfaction of witnessing an up and coming team member understand new concepts, experiencing that "aha" moment, was beyond cool.
With respect to the subjects that I tutor, mathematics is the underlying discipline fundamental to all of them. I believe that for everything we experience, there are underlying mathematical principles at work. Certainly, with respect to my chosen career in finance and accounting, mathematics is essential and having advanced skills is a tremendous advantage.
When I entered my Jr. year at SDSU, I had to pick a major. I was 19 and really didn't have a clue. My highly sophisticated rationale for selecting Accounting was: "well, I like business, and I am good with numbers." Yikes! That was the basis for making a pivotal life decision? Amazingly, and luckily, the result of that simplistic decision making process, was a path into an essential field of business providing a multitude of job opportunities, and an essential core knowledge to better understand business.
Early in my career at EY, I attended a meeting where Charles Schwab spoke. The audience was primarily entrepreneurs, and I was the only accountant there. Surprisingly, Charles' speech was centered on the theme that "Accounting is the language of business". He proclaimed that every business owner, and key manager, needs to have a basic understanding of accounting, as it will have a profound impact on one's business.
When it comes to Excel, what can you say other than it is an essential, ubiquitous tool utilized by virtually every business in the world. Excel goes well beyond accounting and finance, serving professionals in many industries. Virtually every significant business software program that contains numerical data, includes the ability to download in a CSV format for Excel. It is, by far, the most critical tool that virtually all practitioners of finance and accounting rely on. If you master Excel, you will quickly create powerful informative analyses, financial reports, and presentations accurately and expeditiously. Without such proficiency, well, in a few words, bummer, dude!
It is indeed an honor and a pleasure to provide you with tutoring services in these areas. Together, we will aspire to excellence, experiencing the tremendous satisfaction of learning Math, Excel, Accounting and/or Finance as a precursor to the exciting achievements, accomplishments, and career that will inevitably follow. I urge you to contact me if you have any questions, would like to discuss options, or are considering expanding your knowledge through additional courses. My door is always open.
Best of luck, and happy matriculation!
