Hi, I'm Sarah! I started tutoring when I was a senior at La Jolla High School, in 2002, and realized it is something I love to do. I went to Dartmouth College, where I continued to tutor and teach in a variety of roles -- as a teaching assistant, summer robotics camp instructor, and homeless shelter tutor, among others. I graduated in 2006 with a major in physics and a minor in math, and a masters in physics in 2008. After graduation I tutored full time for a year, both privately and for an SAT prep company called Compass Education Group. I continued tutoring as I went back to school to take biology, chemistry, and other medical school prerequisites at Mills College in Oakland. In 2012 I started medical school at the University of Chicago, but for various reasons after two years there I decided not to continue with that. I spent the next two years working at a Shambhala meditation center in Nova Scotia. Since the fall of 2016 I have been back in San Diego, tutoring and preparing to apply to biophysics PhD programs.

Many students have a lot of fear around math and science; one of my biggest strengths as a tutor is providing a nurturing and supportive environment for students to build their confidence in these subjects. With the opportunity to safely ask questions, really digest basic principles, and build at their own pace, students can gain a satisfying sense of mastery and even enjoyment. I also really enjoy working with advanced students, helping them make connections that might not have been emphasized in class, supporting their curiosity, and developing the finer points of their understanding in an atmosphere of fun and mutual appreciation of these great subjects.

Right now I'm specializing in tutoring high school math (including calculus) and physics, but I'm also available to tutor high school chemistry and biology, as well as AP and SAT Subject Test prep in any of those subjects.

Please feel free to contact me for more information or to schedule a lesson. I look forward to hearing from you!

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Math was always a favorite subject of mine growing up, and I felt very comfortable with algebra and loved its puzzles. In college I was a physics major and math minor. This love of math, combined with patience and kindness, is something I hope to share with students.
Calculus,

Calculus

I was a physics major and math minor in college and have a masters in physics, so I have studied and used calculus extensively! I also have years of experience as a calculus tutor; in my roughly ten-year tutoring career this has been the subject I have tutored the most and it is a personal favorite. I hope to share this enthusiasm with you!
Physics,

Physics

I have a BA and MS in physics from Dartmouth and years of experience tutoring physics and serving as a teaching assistant for physics classes.

Thank you Sarah

Very knowledgeable and patient and very happy to connect with Sarah. My daughter is very selective when it comes to tutors and tutoring and she was happy to continue with Sarah after the 1st session and it is going well.

Super helpful

She was sweet and patient with me, she caught up to the material quick and explained it well. Thanks to her I feel more confident for my midterm this week! Physics isn’t an easy subject so I'm glad she was available last minute to help me out.

Yesenia, 1 lesson with Sarah

Thorough, understanding, and patient.

She took the extra time needed to get my HS AP student organized and on the right track. Thank you!

First session went well

At the end of the first session my child was more interactive with me about explaining what she had just learned. We were concerned that after previously being taught for over a year with a highly rated tutor we would not find another fit. Well Sarah seems to have filled that void and as of now her schedule works with ours.

Alexander, 6 lessons with Sarah

Knowledgeable and patience

She helped my daughter work on a test she needed to redo to receive partial credit . She was very easy to work with helping my daughter understand what procedures she needed to do to correct her test.

Sarah is an Exceptional Tutor

My daughter's first session with Sarah was extremely helpful. She was struggling with AP Calculus, but with Sarah's guidance and instruction, the concepts are becoming clear. Sarah's approach is very encouraging, and I highly recommend her as a Calculus tutor.

Pedro, 12 lessons with Sarah

Very helpful

Sarah helped me review for an upcoming math exam that had many concepts that needed clarification. She's on time and makes sure before moving on you understood the material.
