About Susan

It’s really rewarding for me to help a student accomplish his or her academic goals. It’s especially rewarding to help a student who has been struggling with academics, through working together to find ways to get around those challenges, and make learning easier and less stressful.

In addition to teaching psychology courses, I have also facilitated numerous alcohol education courses, parent training courses, and anger management courses. I have to admit that the students in those courses are usually court-mandated to attend, and are typically somewhat resentful that they are required to attend such a course. However, within a short while, most of my students tell me that they enjoy working with me, and that they are glad they came. Regardless of the topic and regardless of how that student comes to me, when I teach or tutor, it's my intention to "bring it to life" and make it as enjoyable, useful, and meaningful as possible, so it's more than simply memorizing information or just “passing a course.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I often find that a particular individual will experience the same types of challenges in a variety of courses, across time. When this is the case, I encourage (and assist) the student to identify individual strengths as well as any challenges that hinder their academic progress, and work with that student to capitalize on those strengths to make studying and learning more effective, efficient, and (hopefully!) more enjoyable.

I typically plan, tailor, and personalize each session according to each individual's strengths, needs, and interests, while working together to accomplish our shared goal. I can assist a student in preparing for an exam, or throughout the entire course.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I imagine that my approach to tutoring is a little different than others in that it’s personalized to the needs of the individual student. Each person learns in his or her own unique manner, and does best under certain conditions. In order to get the most out of our work together, I will ask you to help me understand your academic goals, as well as how you learn, and what gets in the way of your academic progress.

With your permission, we will then explore what we think will be the most effective ways for you to work toward your academic goals, and ways to avoid any “traps” or other non-productive activities, to make your learning experiences as effective and efficient as possible. You may find that what we discover about your learning style and employ for THIS course will continue to be useful for you in OTHER courses, as well.

As of December 2016, I currently have a number of openings for new students, and my schedule is relatively flexible. I will work with you to re-schedule an appointment for the same week, to the extent that I am able, but would need 12 hours for a cancellation. I may be able to offer multi-session or multi-hour discounts. Talk to me about this so we can enter it into our agreement.

If you have questions, or you would like to schedule a time to begin working together, I will look forward to hearing from you. Here’s to your academic success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Psychology

During my graduate training for the Master’s and the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology I taught a number of psychology courses at Virginia Tech (primarily Intro, Abnormal, and Research Methods).

Study Skills

I completed all coursework for the Ph.D. in clinical psychology, and taught at the University level. I specialized in teaching College Success Strategies for students at risk for academic failure, and conducted several research studies and interventions with the goal of enhancing student achievement.

I have worked with a number of students with learning disabilities, as well as mental, emotional, and behavioral challenges. In many cases they have subsequently established appropriate academic goals, and have learned effective study skills, as well as more adaptive methods for managing their emotions and overcoming self-doubts.
