About Alyssa

I have always been a tutor at heart!
In middle and high school, I was first recruited by friends to teach our communal study groups. Soon I was getting free burritos in exchange for tutoring in all subjects, especially Mathematics. I was in advanced math courses and had the knowledge to teach peers in concepts from past years. I used the teacher's lesson plans and quizzes to see what concepts my peers were struggling with, and explained step-by-step the process and reasoning behind the answer. Many teachers gloss over the reasoning behind concepts, and many students assume they are the only one in the room who does not understand. I found as soon as a student understands why a certain step is taken, they can master concepts quickly and feel the confidence that comes from that understanding.

In college, I became a tutor at the International Rescue Committee, teaching refugee children of middle school age Spanish, English and Math. It felt amazing to see kids that have been through such a difficult process fleeing violence, adjusting to a new country and school system, and provide them with the tools and support to have those "AHA!" breakthroughs and succeed academically.

More recently, I taught Spanish to a group of disaster relief volunteers in Ecuador. It's hard for non-speakers to get around in a country that speaks very little English and is a disaster zone, so it was important that they learn quickly and I was happy to facilitate that! I was able to bring my knowledge of the language to the group in a way that they understood, by understanding their ability levels and expanding them from there. Whether it is a specific syntax question or practice with vocabulary, I can help with creativity and caring for the difficult, sometimes daunting undertaking that is learning a language. It's a beautiful journey and I'd be happy to assist you along the way.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
