About Joshua

I am currently working on my PhD in Materials Science and Engineering. I have worked as a tutor to fellow university students for many years with success. I have also been a TA for multiple physics courses during my studies. My Bachelor's degree is in Physics as well.

I think many teachers and tutors forget a very fundamental thing: you need to be able to relate to and see the practicality of a subject to really understand it.

I've always striven for this level throughout my studies and I will do my very best to impart this knowledge to my students. As an engineer, I see the practical aspects of many fields simultaneously and love to share this with new people.

Math has never been the most exciting subject, in my opinion. However, it is invaluable to be able to understand it and apply it to both theoretical and practical, real-life applications. I strive to make mathematics more accessible and useful to the average person. Similarly, I love science but more importantly, I get to do it everyday! I'll explain questions and concepts in real-life situations that I have encountered and be able to present new, interesting questions and concepts for students to think about and work on. I will bring in new examples and practical experiments to help teach you about various aspects of science and mathematics.

I have a large amount of experience in teaching English grammar and syntax skills. The importance of being able to clearly express oneself is paramount to getting and acquiring a job, as well as doing well in an educational context. I primarily focus on more formal and technical writing, which is what one does for classes and employees. I have experience in helping those with English as a second language write and formulate papers as well.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

My current research is in Materials Science, which is a blend of chemistry with physics and engineering. I studied chemistry extensively as a Master's student when I researched new catalysts, such as those you would see in a car. My research gives me many practical examples to use when teaching chemistry to new students.

Physics

I am currently working on my PhD in Materials Science and Engineering. I have worked as a tutor to fellow university students for many years with success. I have also been a TA for multiple physics courses during my studies. My Bachelor's degree is in Physics as well.

Vocabulary

I scored in the 91st percentile in the GRE verbal reasoning, which includes extensive grammar sections. I have also tutored ACT English sections the past. My experience in writing literature papers and other academic papers has taught me a great deal about writing. I also regularly proof papers for exchange students in my program.
