San Diego Mesa College (Sustainability)
My name is Chilala. You can call me Chi, or Lala, I don't mind nick names. I am so excited to be part of this tutoring platform. I am Zambian (African). I grew up speaking 4 languages, including English. I never had to take any ESOL classes because I have a strong English background. I graduated high school in 2004 and waited a while to start college. I'm currently a Sustainability Major for transfer at San Diego Mesa College.
I have moved around quite a bit within the Unites States. I've lived in DC/Maryland, Hampton Roads, Virginia; Austin Texas, and I've been in San Diego for about 7 years. I am currently employed by SDCCD - San Diego Mesa College as a Classroom Tutor, and my current focus is Physical Geography. I work in a classroom setting with the professor and I hold after class sessions as a supplement for the students. However, I also have a good grasp of Environmental Biology, Human Anatomy, and English (Vocabulary, reading, writing, grammar, etc.).
My approach with tutoring is not only about teaching; my ultimate goal is creating independent learning for students. I appreciate the comfortable dialogue that tutoring opens up for students. Often times, I as the tutor also end up learning something from the students. It is very rewarding to help a student get ahead, understand a concept or earn a better grade; I love seeing what does to their confidence. I look forward to connecting with you all, and providing a quality learning experience.
I love Biology. It's everything that we are, in this biosphere and as a species. I've taken quite a few science related classes including General Biology, Human Anatomy, Environmental Biology, Sustainability, Anatomy/physiology combination and Geography. I got mostly A's in the subjects because they consistently peaked my interest. I enjoyed the challenges of the subjects, they helped me work harder. I feel confident when explaining different concepts simply by incorporating real life examples.
I grew up learning, writing and speaking British English, so English has always been one of my stronger subjects. I did very well, in all the English classes I took, which were: English 101 (reading and composition), Oral Communication, and English 205 (critical thinking). I understand how difficult English can be, especially as a second language, so patience is a must for me. I have the patience to teach the subject.
Contact me. I'm here to help. I am fairly flexible and I am willing to work with you about tutoring location.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
