About Tanisha

I have a passion for science because I love seeing young girls aspiring for STEM careers and building their interests.

I received my bachelors degree in Cell and Molecular Biology from San Francisco State University where I was a research scholar and now I am working on my Masters in Cell and Molecular Biology as well at San Diego State University.

What brought me to San Diego was the biotech hub, yes there is one in San Francisco however it is quite expensive to live and I was ready for a new adventure. I have worked for a biotech company, Getting People Better, as a research associate and have worked in research labs for the past five years and am well versed in genetics, microbiology, molecular biology, and stem cell research.

You might be wondering how tutoring fits into all of this! Well, while I was in San Francisco I thought underserved middle school girls of color about science and STEM careers and that sparked my interest for teaching! I thoroughly enjoy talking with students about scientific concepts to help them understand how the process of life and biology work. I enjoy taking a complex subject breaking it down into personal ideas and concepts that students can relate to. I also love talking with students about their passions and pursuits if time permits because I too remember what it was like to try and figure out what I wanted to do with my life!

I would also say that my style of teaching is interactive. I like to get hands on with concepts, build it if we can so we can see it, draw it, talk about it, etc. I also ask my students to repeat back to me what we have just gone over so I can gauge what they are understanding and where we need to spend some extra time. I am also very thorough, patient, engaging, and kind in the process of learning! The concepts within science can themselves seem rather intimidating so the last thing any student or paying parent wants or needs is an unclear, unfocused, or intimidating tutor so I do my very best to avoid those unwanted traits and really get to the essence of the lessons.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Genetics

My degree is in molecular biology and a large component of that includes is understanding genetics. I have done research in transcriptional genetics. I understand the central dogma of genetics very well which is the process of turning a gene into a functional protein that emits some function. The central dogma is the following: nucleotides (ATCG) make up double stranded DNA that undergo transcription to create single stranded mRNA, this is then translated into an amino acid and multiple amino acids strung together is called a polypeptide which encodes for a protein with a function or output.
