About Mitchell

Updated 4/4/17

This week, I began my final quarter at UCSD studying to complete a B.S. in Joint Mathematics and Economics. In completing this degree, I have taken various courses in both fields. If you would like to know more about the classes I have taken, feel free to ask. Hopefully I can help you in the course that you need.

About 5 years ago, I began by tutoring elementary school kids in both math and English at a tutoring center called Kumon. After working at Kumon for about a year, I moved on to privately tutor a few middle school students specifically in math. For the past two years, I have been tutoring math part time, focusing on subjects like calculus, SAT math, and high school "integrated" math.

From my experiences tutoring, I have realized my interest and gift in teaching mathematics. My goal at this point is to begin a credential program at a Cal-State. This will put me on track to obtain a math subject teaching credential, so that I can start teaching math at a high school within a few years. Through WyzAnt, I hope to gain more experience teaching along with the pleasure of guiding students to a deeper understanding.

I encourage students to understand why each problem is done a certain way, rather than just to memorize step-by-step how to solve a specific type of problem. Sometimes, the way that math is taught makes it seem like the solution just magically appeared from thin air. Math should not seem this way, because math is not magic, and every step of the problem can be clarified.

I have plenty of time available weekday afternoons and evenings, so please ask about my availability.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I recently tutored a high school student for SAT math, and I could easily understand every practice problem that we went over. Although I've never tutored specifically for algebra 2, I believe I can explain the concepts clearly.

Discrete Math

Although discrete math was not as emphasized when I was taught in high school, I am confident in my understanding of mathematics to tutor discrete math. I have taken various math classes after high school, so I have a lot of experience dealing with a broad range of mathematics concepts such as number theory, set theory, matrices, logic, probability, modeling functions, inequalities, geometry, etc.

Elementary Math

I have tutored elementary math through a business called kumon for almost one year. My understanding of math is at the upper division undergraduate level, so I can definitely help in this subject.

Geometry

Geometry was easy for me when I took it in 8th grade, and since then, I have had to apply these fundamental concepts into math and physics up to the undergraduate level. Although I have only tutored a few students in geometry, I am confident that I can clarify any problems in simple geometry.

Linear Algebra

I am majoring in Joint Math and Econ at UCSD, so I have taken many lower div and upper div math courses. These courses include both the lower division requirement for linear algebra and an upper division math major requirement for applied linear algebra. I am comfortable in this subject.
