About Sophie

I am currently pursuing a Master's Degree at the University of Montana and graduated cum laude from Yale University with a BA in History. After college, I worked with Teach For America in the rural Mississippi Delta, where I taught geometry for one summer and 7th grade math for two years. As a result of the rigorous standards to which I held my students, my first cohort of 7th graders became the first group of 8th graders in the district ever to be offered the option to enroll Algebra I, rather than Pre-Algebra, which was the typical course of study for 8th graders in the county.

At Achievement First in Brooklyn, NY, I taught 7th grade math aligned to the Common Core standards and led a targeted reading instruction group to support fluency and comprehension. Seeking a more interdisciplinary, student-driven learning environment, I then spent two years as a garden-based educator in San Francisco, working with preschool through 4th-grade students. Finally, in my first year of graduate school, I taught college composition at the University of Montana. In addition to my classroom experience, I have also taught SAT prep classes to high school students, focusing in particular on grammar, vocabulary, and test-taking strategies.

I achieved a perfect score on both the GRE and SAT Verbal Reasoning Sections and placed in the top 1% of scorers overall on the SAT (percentile by cumulative score is not available on the GRE.) Test-taking is a unique academic skill, and I offer both tutoring in academic skills and instruction in test-taking strategies particular to specific standardized tests including the ISEE, SAT, ACT, and GRE.

I look forward to discussing your tutoring needs and working together soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

As a former math teacher, I was credentialed in 7th-12th grade math. I taught Pre-Algebra in Mississippi and New York. In order to teach that subject effectively, I needed to know the Algebra I standards well, so my professional development included training in Algebra I instruction. In addition, I have tutored students in Algebra I and SAT Math Prep, which includes Algebra I skills.

American History

I was a History major at Yale University from 2006-2010. My thesis looked at northeastern settlers who stayed in California after the gold rush and helped establish California's wheat industry. My course work included study of the American Revolution, African American History, History of Women in the 20th Century, American Indian History, Southern California History, American Environmental History, and the History of Frontiers and Borderlands in the American West. The study of history builds awareness, critical thinking, and informed citizenship; in my teaching I encourage discussion that helps students move beyond the perception that history is the simple memorization of facts to see instead that studying history helps us understand ourselves.

English

As a graduate student at the University of Montana, I taught College Composition, which covered the fundamentals of research, writing in multiple genres, and revision. As an undergrad at Yale, I earned high marks in English courses on Shakespeare and Milton, and in my senior year of high school I earned a 5 on the English Literature AP exam. In addition, I scored an 800 on the Reading section of the SAT, and a perfect score on the Verbal portion of the GRE.

SAT Math

As a former math teacher, my secondary math certification covered grades 7-12. I taught Pre-Algebra, which is a subject heavily drawn on in the Math section of the SAT. In addition, I have taught summer school Geometry and summer SAT Prep camps covering Math, Reading, and Writing. Over the past several months I have tutored several students in Algebra II. From my years of preparing students for state tests in math, I have built up an arsenal of effective test-taking strategies for time management, estimation, and word problem comprehension. Most importantly, I pay attention to my students' particular strengths and weaknesses and develop individualized test prep plans tailored to their needs.

SAT Reading

I scored an 800 on the Reading section of the SAT when I took the exam in high school. At Yale, I majored in History, which required that I read and quickly distill key ideas from hundreds of pages of text each week. During the graduate school application process I also achieved a perfect score on the Verbal Reasoning section of the GRE. I have taught an SAT Prep class that included practice in the Reading section, and my teaching background includes extensive instruction in reading comprehension strategies.

SAT Writing

I scored an 800 on the SAT Writing section when I took the exam in high school. In college, I majored in History, a writing-intensive course of study. Furthermore, in my first year as a graduate student, I took a course entitled "Teaching College Composition" and taught Writing 101, which includes the fundamentals of grammar and mechanics as well as the development and practice of rhetorical skills.

Study Skills

As a teacher of middle school math, targeted reading intervention, and college composition, and as an SAT prep tutor, I have consistently integrated instruction in the practice of strong study skills into my pedagogy. In middle school math, for example, I explicitly taught my students how to organize their binders to make their class notes, corrected homework assignments, and graded exams available to use as study materials; I also conducted binder checks each week and provided assistance after school for students who struggled with organization. My instruction in all subjects emphasizes time management skills and self-assessment as a method of choosing high-impact, low-effort study strategies depending on students' areas of weakness.
