About Chris

I've been a science educator for over 10 years. I currently teach science at a private high school and have also worked at public schools, community college, and summer experiential programs (eg. Florida Keys Community College, La Jolla Country Day School, High Tech High, Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, and Seamester).

I received my bachelors from Stanford and my masters from the University of Miami, was a Sea Grant Knauss Fellow, and worked for NOAA prior to teaching full time.

When working with students my approach is threefold. First, I identify and address their needs. Do they need immediate help completing an upcoming assignment or cramming for a test? Or are they looking for long term support getting ahead? Being a teacher myself, I know what educators are looking for. So when I work with students I don’t just help them complete the assignment, I help them understand how those assignments fit into the bigger picture.

Second, having worked with hundreds of families, I know that educational goals usually reach beyond coursework. Students need to find purpose, cultivate passions, and build self confidence to become engaged learners.

Finally, I help my students learn what it means to think like a scientist. By focusing on the key practices of science - asking questions, interpreting evidence, constructing explanations, and engaging in argument - students develop stronger critical thinking skills they can apply throughout their academic career.

Prior to booking a first appointment, I typically chat with prospective students to identify their goals and confirm we are a good fit. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I've been teaching high school level Biology for over 5 years. I studied Marine Biology at Stanford and have taught Marine Biology at the Florida Keys Community College and for the study abroad program semester.

Chemistry

I've been teaching high school chemistry for over 5 years. I've taught at private schools (eg. La Jolla Country Day School) and public (eg. High Tech High), working with students at both basic and advanced levels. While Chemistry typically gets a bad rap, I try to focus on getting students to understand that it's all about understanding how the world works at the molecular level.
