About Ellre

I graduated from UC Davis in 2013 with a double-major in International Relations and Spanish, and a minor in Latin American and Hemispheric Studies. After working in the non-profit sector my post-grad year, I decided to pursue a career in healthcare. Recently, I completed a Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program at California State University, San Marcos, completing all the prerequisites required to apply to medical school.

As an undergraduate, I was chosen to be a peer tutor by the Department Chair of Spanish and Portuguese. More recently, I am currently employed as a high school AVID tutor in North County where I tutor in Common Core Math 1, pre-algebra, algebra I, algebra II, English, Spanish, Biology, and Chemistry.

My services are available to all students in North County San Diego (Escondido, San Marcos, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Penasquitos, 4S Ranch, Poway, and Carmel Valley).

I have experience working in a Spanish Immersion Elementary School in Davis, California. In this position, I helped in everyday classroom activities and lessons in a Spanish immersion First Grade classroom. I expanded my knowledge and experience of bilingual and ESL teaching by interning at a local school in Santiago, Chile teaching students while participating in a six-month study abroad immersion program.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I spent the last school year as an AVID tutor at Orange Glen High School in Escondido, California conducting tutorial lessons in Common Core Math 1 for Freshmen students. In this position, I was able to lead students towards understanding problems/concepts, rather than just memorizing pure formulas or steps.

Working within a group or with an individual student, my focus is to understand the student's rationalization/approach to the problem. From there, I would ask the student why they chose that particular method or equation; prompting him/her to think about mathematical concepts and critically analyze why he/she thinks that's the best approach.

Something I noticed from this academic year, is how the majority of the students struggled with the passage-based problems. This was improved by incorporating the strategy of writing down pertinent information and practice via constant exposure.

Organic Chemistry

I completed a college-level organic chemistry course with a B and a college-level organic lab course with an A. This course was competed at California State University of San Marcos, as part of their Post-Bacc Pre-Health Professionals Program curriculum.

During the semester I learned about functional groups, reaction mechanisms, organic synthesis, nomenclature, and spectroscopic interpretations.

Soccer

I started playing soccer competitively since middle school and was a member of Carlsbad Lightning and Rancho Santa Fe Attack.

In high school, I coached soccer during the summer sports camps under the direction the the Rancho Santa Fe Director, Coach Malcolm Tovey.

I eventually transferred the skills I learned in soccer to field hockey, where I played at the University of California, Davis as a Division I athlete.

I still play soccer recreationally in both the Co-Ed and Women leagues.

Spanish

I received Bachelor Degrees in both International Relations and Spanish from the University of California, Davis. I also spent six months in Chile studying abroad and completing course requirements needed for my Spanish major, while interning at a local school tutoring students ages six to fifteen.

As an undergraduate, I provided one-on-one extensive tutoring to all undergraduates enrolled in Spanish courses. My tutorial lessons involved reviewing grammar, proofreading essays, and preparing for oral/written exams.
