About Jaclyn

Hello! My name is Jaclyn. Originally from outside of Philadelphia, I am currently living and working in beautiful, sunny San Diego. I moved to San Diego to pursue my MEd. in TESOL, Literacy, and Culture at the University of San Diego. In May 2015 I completed my degree program. Throughout my program I was fortunate enough to have a position as an English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor at an open enrollment adult language program in San Diego. My experiences at this open enrollment language school inspired my master's capstone a—case study analyzing student, instructor, and administrator perspectives on the purpose and role of assessment in open enrollment programs. Post graduation I continued to work at an open enrollment language school and local community colleges teaching ESL. Currently I am employed at the University of California San Diego as a Basic Writing Lecturer. In all of my positions as an instructor I have provided one-on-one tutoring instruction and find it very important for helping students succeed.

Prior to teaching in San Diego I also had experience teaching English to Kenyan students via virtual classrooms, abroad in El Progeso, Honduras, and domestically for a continuing education program within bilingual public charter school. I really enjoy teaching adults and find my job extremely rewarding. I love getting to know my students on a personal level to cultivate their interest in the lessons. I thrive in a diverse environment and have taught students from countries all over the world, making use of my undergraduate degree in International Studies from American University. I have always loved learning about different cultures, and I believe that having a cultural understanding is extremely important for creating an open and trusting classroom culture. It is my plan to continue to teach English as a Second Language to adult English language learners in both the language schools and community college sectors in San Diego.

In addition to teaching, I live a very active lifestyle and love to feed my curiosity with books. My passions include reading, practicing yoga, running through Sunset Cliffs National Park, and languages.

MEd. TESOL, TESOL certificate, grammar curriculum design and instruction, academic writing, reading comprehension, critical thinking, IELTS and TOEFL test prep, AP test prep

If you are interested in working with me, please feel free to contact me through Wyzant and schedule a lesson. I love to get to know new people and helping students achieve their goals.
