About Alex

I have had the pleasure of teaching all age groups from preschool to senior citizens. I have two years' experience teaching anthropology at the university and community college level, and seven years' experience as a teaching assistant guiding entry-level undergraduates in studying and writing academic papers about world history. For ten years, I have regularly given public lectures and classroom presentations on Chinese and Chinese American culture and history, and I speak fluent Mandarin Chinese.

My academic work focuses on transnational religious and ethnic identity, religion and modernity, and comparative multiculturalism. I have authored numerous academic articles and a forthcoming book on Islamic revival among the Hui minority people in modern China. My ten years of experience in the field of museum education also includes curating exhibits, community outreach, and designing innovative educational programming. I have a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of California, San Diego, and a B.A. in Anthropology with a minor in Chinese language and literature from the George Washington University.

Besides teaching numerous university-level anthropology classes, I have conducted extensive field research in northwest China, presented at national anthropology conferences, and published numerous academic works in anthropology.

History is a fundamental aspect of both my research and teaching experience. I specialize in Chinese and Chinese American history, but I have also taught classes in world history and the history of diversity in the United States.

I am very flexible in scheduling and eager to work with new students.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
