For the past 5 years, I've been teaching history online for the University of Phoenix. Before that, I taught at community colleges, San Diego State University, the Art Institute, and for the Navy. Some of the subjects I've taught at the college level include world civilizations (ancient and modern), ancient history, world humanities, western humanities, Europe between the wars, WWII, and lots and lots of U.S. history (before and after the Civil War). My master's thesis was on the war crimes trial of a Nazi and how it affected American culture.
In graduate school, I tutored at-risk students (usually low-income and student-athletes) in the Rhetoric and Writing Students program and was a proctor for Disabled Student Services. I also ran study groups for the history courses assigned to certain professors. I was unable to continue this kind of one-on-one interaction while teaching at local universities and colleges (because it's a potential conflict of interest), but as I'm teaching primarily online now, I'm excited to get back to it.
If you're looking for a tutor, it's probably to pass an exam. I'm a great test taker (I scored in the 96% percentile on the GRE and did well on the LSAT, too) and have lots of experience with grading papers. As a graduate assistant, then tutor, and later as an intern instructor at community college, I spent many years grading other teachers' exams. I've also been a reader (grader) for the California High School Exit Exam and the California State University Early English Placement Exam. This has given me a lot of insight into what test readers/evaluators are looking for -- and how to please them! I can happily assist you in preparing for your history tests, whether they're true/false, short answer, multiple choice, or essay.
I love helping students write history essays especially!
I can travel but am also very comfortable with online meetings, for which I'm willing to charge less. Contact me with any questions you have or to schedule the first appointment! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
