I studied Elementary Education in my undergraduate years at the University of Colorado in Boulder. I have my teaching license and I am certified to teach Kindergarten through 5th grade. I love teaching! It is the most special and rewarding job and I couldn't be happier with the path I chose. I had a hard time finding a job after I finished my student teaching in December; I think it's hard to find a teaching position open half way through the year. I was doing some volunteer work in special needs classrooms and was working in a classroom that needed a paraprofessional to start right away. I loved working with these children so much, and I immediately sent in my resumé for the position and got the job! I work full time at Mountain Vista High School in the substantial support needs classroom. I have not formally tutored before, but being a nanny and babysitter and working in classrooms throughout my life, I have assisted many kiddos in completing their homework and teaching to them so that they may understand something better. I love working with kids and being able to help them through something that they are struggling with in order to succeed would be a privilege.
During my student teaching experience (Aug 2015-Dec 2015) I assessed students’ reading comprehension, fluency and accuracy using ability-based reading groups and the Expeditionary Learning curriculum in Denver Public Schools. I also designed grammar and vocabulary lessons because there was no curriculum for these subjects. These lessons focused on allowing my students to be creative with their learning.
I can't wait to get started on helping kids to help them understand things they might be struggling with. One of my favorite parts of teaching is working one-on-one with a student who needs help and seeing that "aha!" moment in them where they finally understand and can continue to grow in their learning process. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
