About Tam

I hold a Master's Degree in Linguistics, and I work as a Volunteer Adult Literacy Tutor for READ/San Diego. I also spent four years as a Teaching Assistant for the San Diego Unified School District; subjects included Reading, English, and Writer's Workshop. But more than my education and my experience, it is my love of language and my passion for helping students gain more self-confidence in their own language skills that makes me an outstanding tutor.

I truly look forward to being matched with a student who could use my help! I prefer to meet at the City Heights/Weingart Library, but am willing to travel a reasonable distance.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I hold a Master's Degree in Linguistics from San Diego State University. I also spent four years as a Teaching Assistant for the San Diego Unified School District in subjects that included English, Reading, and Writer's Workshop. Most importantly, I have a genuine love of the English language. I am a patient, compassionate tutor, and I enjoy helping students gain confidence in their own language skills.

ESL/ESOL

To earn my Master's Degree in Linguistics from San Diego State University, I completed a graduate-level seminar in "First and Second Language Acquisition." Among the topics we covered were possible problems for learners of English as a Second Language, including the sound system and sentence structure of English.

In addition, since 2014 I have been working for READ/San Diego as an Adult Literacy Tutor. I meet individually with a student who has been taking an ESL course, but still needs improvement in speaking, reading, and writing English. We have made measurable progress towards improving her fluency in English!

Grammar

English grammar can often be confusing! I have a Master's Degree in Linguistics, which is the systematic study of language. What that provides me with is years of examining grammar and seeing how it 'ticks.' As a result, I have a firm grasp of the subject, and would love the opportunity to help build a student's self-confidence in this area.

Macintosh

I have been using Macintosh (Apple) computers for over a decade! I am thoroughly comfortable with the operating system, and have worked training new operators on various computer systems in the past. I hold a Master's Degree in Linguistics, and I work as a Volunteer Adult Literacy Tutor for READ/San Diego. I also spent four years as a Teaching Assistant for the San Diego Unified School District; subjects included Reading, English, and Writer's Workshop.

Phonics

I have been an Adult Literacy Tutor for READ/San Diego since 2014. During Tutor Training, we were taught basic rules of Phonics and how to use them to help students improve their spelling and reading skills. For example, we teach long and short vowel sounds, vowel digraphs, prefixes and suffixes, rhyming patterns, homophones, and so on.

Reading

I have loved to read since I was very young, and believe that the ability to read well is an essential part of our lives. I am currently an Adult Literacy Tutor. I am looking forward to helping more students of all ages gain confidence in their ability to read fluently and to comprehend what they have read.

Spelling

For four years, I worked as a Teaching Assistant for the San Diego Unified School District. Subjects I assisted in included English, Reading, and Writer's Workshop. In all of these classes, spelling was a fundamental element and I often delivered and/or graded weekly spelling quizzes.

In addition, since 2014 I have worked as an Adult Literacy Tutor for READ/San Diego, where I meet twice a week for one-on-one sessions with a woman and help her to improve her abilities in reading and writing. A large part of her writing challenges involve spelling, so at each meeting we begin with a new list of unfamiliar words for her to learn.

What is even more useful is that we always do some work on spelling PATTERNS and syllabication practice. This work provides her with the tools to systematically approach the challenge of spelling new words in her writing or on quizzes, allowing her to break the words down and then recognize familiar vowel sounds and the patterns that can be used to spell them. As a result, she has become measurably more successful at spelling!

Vocabulary

I scored in the 99th percentile on verbal portion of the SAT's, most of which is vocabulary. In addition, through my extensive reading since childhood, I have developed an above-average active vocabulary. And finally, I endeavor to utilize the full extent of my verbal resources on an everyday basis, to keep the knowledge fresh! ;-)

Writing

For over four years, I worked as a Teaching Assistant for the San Diego Unified School District. Subjects included English and a 'Writer's Workshop' course facilitated through San Diego State University. In addition, for the past year I have been working through READ/San Diego as an Adult Literacy Tutor, teaching reading and writing.
