My credentials are many, my experience extensive, my passion for teaching and helping others to cultivate their best effort is my purpose in life! With a degree in Music/Piano, I taught private music lessons to children in their home and in a music studio; I found my curiosity about people's behavior and perceptions piqued in Psychology 101 and went on to earn a BA in Psych; which led to a MS in Human Resource Mgmt./OD (Organizational Development) specializing in Training and Curriculum. I began to focus on communication in relationships and stepped into my professional teaching career. I earned a teaching credential from the State of California and pursued an independent program as Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). I have taught at the junior college and university level, adult schools/senior centers and worked with children and teenagers in a variety of topics, both personally and professionally oriented. I know how to get along with and motivate all age groups. Following my avocation, I went on to earn a 2nd Masters in Consciousness Studies, a Doctorate of Religious Studies and a Doctorate of Divinity. I have applied all my teaching skills and passion for teaching/learning in every position I've held, including starting my own teaching and counseling center.
I am eager to help you/your child discover and cultivate a potential to learn anything. I focus on the process of how to learn by helping the student master manageable pieces of information and concepts and then discerning how to put it all back together...these are the steps to success. My goal is to provide you/your child with all the study skills necessary to learn and to nurture a life-long curiosity about life. I can help anyone determine their learning style and rhythm for maximum benefit. An understanding of the practical application of any theory/concept makes it a useful tool. I enjoy having fun and endeavor to be practical in the learning process, keeping discussions and teaching points relevant to the student to keep him/her motivated. I am easy to understand, good-natured and a great motivator. Let's get started and see how far you can go!
Roxie Hart Dear Student,

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am an ordained, practicing minister of metaphysics which focuses on the metaphorical and symbolic meaning of scripture. I teach metaphysical Bible classes along with the mystical aspects of Judaism and Christianity. I am familiar with the stories and contributions of the characters in the Bible and their place in history. I reference both the Old and New Testaments on a weekly basis.
I've done extensive preparation and research into the Common Core approach to math and will be to help students and parents make sense of it as well as offering students the "old school" methodology to enhance the problem-solving processes. I use everyday items and processes to give math a practical application and meaning.
I have played acoustic guitar for decades. I teach beginning students proper guitar technique, note playing/melody, rhythm and picking patterns. Students are taught the relationship to the piano keyboard and how to read the Treble cleff and chord charts, while learning basic music theory.
I've played keyboards (piano, organ) and guitar for decades, teaching piano--both in a studio and in student's homes. I earned an associate's degree in Music at the beginning of my college studies. I also played in two school bands and a garage band for a few years. I read music and appreciate all genres.
My extensive academic work, personal research and life-long career of counseling/coaching has been about the inextricably linked mind-body functioning. I have a BA in psychology with a recent return to classes for an update on the DSM5; and, one of my Masters degrees is in Consciousness Studies. My professional career has branched off into further research and exploration of quantum physics and the energetic functioning of the body, stimulated by thoughts, beliefs and perceptions. There is significant evidence that our fight-or-flight tendencies (based on fear) generate excessive stress chemicals that affect our well-being. Humanity is the only species that is all about consciousness and using the human body to effectively (psychologically) and efficiently (physiologically) live our lives.
I teach, facilitate, present and extemporaneously speak in a variety of venues and to a wide range of audiences numbering 3-600+ under all sorts of circumstances. Always prepared with an abundance of material, I also regularly read the audience’s reaction to adapt my material, tone, pace and degree of difficulty to maximize the impact. The curricula I have developed, the training aids prepared and the materials shared promote effective interaction with students and audiences. I encourage active involvement in classes and have taught college students how to improve their public speaking skills and new teachers how to teach, train, facilitate and engage their students. I have coached clients in performance and relaxation skills to enhance their presence. Teaching the art of storytelling to develop characters and voices afforded me the opportunity to be extremely creative in eliminating resistance, shyness, self-consciousness.
Tapping into the imagination and experiences of others is fertile ground for mental and emotional participation during my presentations. I prefer thoughtful dialogue to debate, however respectful persuasiveness is a useful skill in promoting any call to action. I am fairly adept in the use of appropriate humor and stories to engage others, frequently using myself as a live “training aid” to make a point and build relationships.
Public speaking/performance is about knowing one’s material and understanding people, keeping your own ego in check and sincerely providing something meaningful to others. There are specific skills and techniques that promote dynamism and unconscious habits that detract from one’s effectiveness that must be modified or substituted with more relate-able characteristics. I believe that developing a level of comfort when speaking to others—under all circumstances—is the key to success in life. The ability to effectively present oneself and ideas is essential in every relationship and situation. Those who hone the art of public speaking develop the confidence that makes the difference in any endeavor.
My second Masters degree was awarded in the field of Consciousness Studies and my first Doctoral degree was granted in Religious Studies. I have formally studied philosophy, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Judaism, Kabbalah, Islam, Christianity and Christian mysticism. As part of my New Thought/Metaphysical ministry, I have researched Native American spirituality, Shintoism, Theosophy, Transcendentalism, mindfulness, mind/body connection and quantum physics. I am always looking for the threads of wisdom and Truth that are woven through the established doctrine of a religion, faith or philosophy.
In my research, which is also my avocation, I have become quite familiar with various denominations and fringe components (variations) of traditional religions. I am open-minded in interpreting the teachings for practical and personal application. First and foremost I am a teacher (rather than minister), offering insight and dialogue as thoughtful interpretation for others to come to their own conclusions. I host/facilitate discussion groups that promote expansion of thought. I help others learn how to discern metaphor and meaning in written material/scripture, film, and music.
I am also a psycho-spiritual counselor who starts with a basic premise that people want to feel better about themselves and their relationships. To do this, we explore perceptions, learned behavior, relational dynamics, listening abilities, familial/cultural/religious influences, professional perspectives, and beliefs about anything and everything in order to discover the motivation that is at the unconscious level. In this process, it is possible to begin to “see differently” and find more effective approaches to life and relationships.
I am a process-oriented teacher. Using effective study skills to retain information is complemented with the ability to think a concept through find its meaning and application. I am a licensed Neuro-Linguistic Programming-NLP practitioner and am able to help students understand how they perceive, process and retain information through their preferred modality and how to use that personal insight more effectively to enhance their study time.
