About Justin

I work closely with students to identify their specific needs to provide an ideal learning environment so that they can excel. I hold a Master's and PhD in Linguistics and a BA in Spanish, Latin American Literature and History. I have extensive experience working as a reading instructor, Spanish teacher and documentary and descriptive linguist.

As part of my BA in Spanish I studied abroad in Granada, Spain and in Oaxaca, Mexico. At the University of Texas at Austin, in the department of Spanish and Portuguese, I have taught beginning and intermediate Spanish courses and have worked as a teaching assistant for the same courses.

For reading instruction I utilize a specific methodology designed to help student eliminate mild to severe reading problems - including dyslexia. After my undergraduate education, I spent nearly seven years as an education consultant traveling extensively throughout the United States setting up reading programs in K-12 and college level education settings. During that time, I trained teachers and teaching assistants to specialize in this reading methodology for the compete elimination of students' reading problems. This same methodology can also be applied to English language learning for English language learners.

For my PhD, I have worked extensively as a documentary and descriptive linguist. Since 2007 I have headed a major research project working on the documentation and description of a southern Otomanguean language spoken in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. I continue to regularly conduct workshops in Oaxaca with speakers of these languages working on the writing of pedagogical and descriptive grammars. At the University of Texas at Austin, I taught Linguistics and worked in the Archive for the Indigenous languages of Latin America.

I am available to work with you or your child to improve your Reading, Spanish language skills or your English skills. If you need help eliminating ANY reading problem or just want to improve your reading speed and comprehension - I can help make reading much easier for you. I am available to tutor you in basic to advanced level Spanish, and I can work with you on your acquisition of English, where we can focus on basic to advanced skills and/or business English.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I have a PhD in linguistics, This includes training in phonology and phonetics and how the brain processes language. I also have extensive experience in application the use and application of a reading methodology designed to eliminate mild to severe reading problems. This method is excellent for the elimination of reading problems associated with dyslexia, reading comprehension, phonemic awareness, fluency and speed of reading.

For my work on dyslexia I spent nearly seven years working as a reading consultant. As part of this work I traveled extensively throughout the United States setting up and maintaining reading programs in K-12 and college level education settings. The program entailed three years of onsite training. Year one included training teachers and teaching assistants for seven weeks spread out across the academic year. Year two included five weeks of training and year three involved the training of a onsite trainer in order to maintain the program for the school district. I was in charge of all these facets of the program.

ESL/ESOL

During my undergraduate degree I worked as a tutor in Mason County Literacy as a tutor in the community center and at the corrections facility for Thurston County, Washington. Since then I have worked as a private tutor for both individuals and in corporate settings to teach basic English skills and business English for corporate clients. My background in linguistics also provides me with specific training in language acquisition.

Phonics

I have a PhD in linguistics which provides me special training in phonology, phonetics and the relationship of how the phoneme relates to phonemic awareness for reading. I also have extensive training in a methodology for reading instruction that is designed to help student eliminate mild to severe reading problems, including dyslexia.

After my undergraduate degree I spent nearly seven years working as an education consultant for a Reading company where I traveled extensively throughout the United States setting up reading programs in K-12 and college level education settings. During that time I trained teachers and teaching assistants in this reading methodology used for the compete elimination of the student's reading problems.

Personable, methodical, patient

Justin is personable and methodical (even marks pauses in reading on the page). A command of phonics and individual words alone doesn't make for smooth reading evidently, and Justin is patient enough (even with a third grader and his parents) to both challenge and work through challenges. (His own background is also very impressive!)
