About Ari

I teach law at Grossmont College. I have taught K-12 (including special education) as a substitute. I have taught Intro to Economics as a Teaching Assistant while I was in grad school. I have two middle school age children who I have taught in a homeschool setting. I have tutored elementary, high school, and college students. Subjects that I have tutored for college students include writing, math, chemistry, organic chemistry, economics, and law.

I lived in Guatemala for a few months. While I was there, I studied Spanish in a total immersion program. This included one-on-one instruction for 5 hours/day, 5 days/week. I learned the language very thoroughly, so I am in a good position to pass that knowledge along to students.

I took the LSAT once and did well. I took the California Bar Exam once and passed. Success on these tests requires hard work and a good strategy. My students will do well on these tests because they will know what work they have to do, and they will have a good strategy for approaching the exam.

My degrees focus on environmental science, economics, and law. I have experience teaching economics at a university, and I have experience tutoring economics and law for university students. My plain English explanations are always effective, useful, and well-received.

I look forward to engaging sessions where my students discover how fun and interesting the material is. Yes, even test prep can be fun and interesting. Contact me for more information and to schedule a lesson.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have taught 8th grade special ed, which included students with ADHD. Also, I have home schooled my own child, who has ADHD. I have always been successful when teaching students who have ADHD.

Algebra 1

As a homeschool teacher, I have taken many trainings to learn how to teach Common Core Algebra 1. Additionally, I have taught Common Core Algebra 1 to several students who always end up enjoying their math homework.

Bar Exam

I passed the California Bar Exam on my first try. I passed because I learned a specific strategy that works for the bar exam. I can teach this strategy to other students.

Chemistry

In college, I took general chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, geochemistry, soil chemistry, and biogeochemistry. I excelled in every one of those.

College Counseling

College counseling is a very narrow slice of planning your life. It includes what colleges you will apply to, what you will select as your major, and which classes you will take before you graduate.

I have been providing college counseling to my tutoring students and to my classroom students since the late '90s. This includes undergrad, grad, and law students.

Part of the reason I am successful in providing college counseling is that I as a lot of questions. I want to make sure that the students academic plan coordinates with their career plan and life plan.

Common Core

I have home schooled my own children for the past few years. This has covered grades 4-8. We participated in a home school program that trained parents specifically in Common Core. I participated in a lot of that training, and I feel comfortable tutoring Common Core students (especially in math).

Criminal Justice

In law school, I took criminal law and criminal procedure. I can easily tutor these parts of criminal justice.

Dyslexia

I have taught 8th grade special ed, which included dyslexic students. Also, I have home schooled my own child, who has dyslexia. I have always been successful when teaching dyslexic students.

Economics

I studied economics throughout undergrad and grad school, and I taught economics while attending graduate school.

Elementary (K-6th)

I interact well with elementary students. I have taught K-6 in the public school system. Also, I have taught K-6 as a home school teacher. I have specific training with Common Core, especially math. And, I have had success with average students, gifted students, and students with disabilities.

Elementary Math

As a homeschool teacher, I have taken many trainings to learn how to teach Common Core elementary math. Additionally, I have taught Common Core elementary math to many students who always end up enjoying their math homework.

Handwriting

I have taught handwriting to both of my children. They were home schooled. Also, I taught handwriting when I worked as a substitute teacher.

IELTS

The IELTS is a standardized test for English reading, writing, listening, and speaking. I have experience teaching all those aspects of English, as well as standardized test skills, to international and ESL students.

Law

I'm an attorney, and I'm a good teacher, so naturally, I'm a good tutor for law.

Organic Chemistry

My bachelor of science degree includes 16 quarter hours of organic chemistry.

Political Science

My bachelor of arts degree includes a strong focus on political science. My master's degree was approximately half political science. My law degree also supports my ability to tutor political science.

Public Speaking

I studied public speaking throughout middle school, high school, and my first year of college. I learned many specific public speaking strategies and techniques during that time. I refined my skills during and after college by delivering various speeches and presentations in academic and professional settings. I have been successful tutoring people who want to improve their public speaking skills. I have tutored public speaking off and on since the 1980's. Generally, I have tutored public speaking for adults and teens. Occasionally, I have taught this skill to children. Some of my tutoring experience was in a school setting. I helped my students develop their public speaking skills when I taught in the public school system, when I taught college, and when I taught a group of children in a home school collective. Some of my experience tutoring public speaking was in a business setting where I tutored groups of entrepreneurs. I have also conducted one-on-one lessons for college students, trainers, entrepreneurs, and artists. I can help students in a single lesson or in a series of lessons depending on the student's needs.

Social Studies

The National Council for the Social Studies defines social studies as "the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence." I have extensive training in the social sciences, humanities, and civic competence including degrees in economics, policy, and law. I have a well-rounded social studies education. I am ready to put information into meaningful context, so I can pass my education along to my students.

Spanish

I lived in Guatemala for a few months. While there, I studied Spanish in a total immersion program. I learned the language very well in terms of grammar and vocabulary.

Spelling

I have always loved words. I used to read the dictionary for fun. I especially enjoyed the etymology. Knowing the history of a word makes it a lot easier to remember how to spell the word. I can help with the phonics aspect of spelling, but I can also help students develop a meaningful relationship with each word. This makes it much easier to remember the spelling.

Study Skills

I have taught study skills throughout my time teaching primary and secondary school as well as college. This time period covers the last 14 years.

I have had great success helping students of all ages regardless of learning disability or learning style. I don't try to make one size fit all. I adjust which skills I teach to match the needs of the student.

Helpful, Patient, and Stellar — I had been searching for a tutor for months to get ready for my LSAT. I had almost given up until I came across Ari. There are very few that are as patient, caring, and helpful as he is. If you feel like there is no hope, or like it is impossible for you to succeed in whichever subject is troubling you, you must have a session with Ari. Not only will he ensure that you could, in fact, succeed. But ...
