About Lauren

My mother was a high school teacher and my father is a lawyer, so I became a lawyer who teaches! I have been tutoring and teaching for almost 20 years. My experience includes: teaching English for a well-known Japanese private language school, where I had a nearly perfect lesson rating; working as the head teaching assistant for a university course about constitutional law; and designing and teaching a law school course. I also taught and tutored LSAT preparation for five years for one of the two major test preparation companies.

My approach to tutoring focuses on the student's process to help achieve goals. I first want to learn what the student hopes to achieve by working with a tutor. Next, we review the student's current study plan and create a study or training schedule. During each session, we work on no more than one or two skills, we review those skills at the end of the session, and I give the student exercises to practice those skills before the next session.

The best studying happens when a student is comfortable without being distracted. When possible, the student should have a consistent study routine, which includes studying in the same place each time. For these reasons, I recommend either meeting at the student's home or at a library or coffee shop that will be a convenient place for the student to study independently as well.

I appreciate feedback and will work with any special requests or needs of students. I am excited to work with you to achieve your studying goals!

I have taught English language to Japanese students who wanted to learn conversation, business English, IELTS, TOEFL, and TOEIC. When teaching and tutoring test preparation, I worked with many students who were English language learners, and I helped them improve their reading comprehension scores by using clues to understand English writing.

I have over five years of experience teaching and tutoring the LSAT — my score was in the 99th percentile, and I helped students in all score ranges improve their scores. I have taken and passed two different bar exams—California and Florida—and know how to create an effective study schedule even while working a full-time job. I have also worked as an alumni interviewer for Princeton University.

I look forward to helping you plan for success and study smarter!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bar Exam

I have taken and passed the Florida and California Bar Exams. I also taught at an ABA-accredited law school as an adjunct professor for a year. I have helped friends and relatives study for the California Bar Exam. And I have experience reading and editing legal writing, which is key to success in many bar exams.

Criminal Justice

I have worked as a public defender for 8 years. I also co-founded & wrote the curriculum for a Federal Defender Clinic at McGeorge School of Law, where I taught as an adjunct professor for one year. I have filed & won criminal appeals in addition to my trial work. I have also published articles about criminal law and taught in high school education programs about law.

Law

After graduating with honors from a top-5 law school, I have practiced law for over ten years. During that time, I have recruited and supervised law student interns and edited students' legal writing. I also co-created and taught a law school course at an ABA-accredited law school.

LSAT

After scoring in the 99th percentile on the LSAT, I started teaching & tutoring LSAT students in 2001. I have helped hundreds of students improve their scores. I specialize in teaching test-taking skills, and I can also help you with specific LSAT question types!

Political Science

I graduated with honors from Princeton University with a degree in politics, the equivalent of political science. I also have a law degree, and have worked as both a state and federal employee. Additionally, I read regularly about politics, government, and international relations. I am comfortable reading academic articles about these topics and am familiar with current and international events.

Public Speaking

I have worked as a trial attorney for over 8 years. I also worked as a law school professor, a teaching assistant for a university course, and a presenter for education programs inside prisons and at NYU Law School. I participate in a monthly public storytelling event in San Diego, where I have been selected to perform two personal essays. In college, I was a member of the Parliamentary Debate Panel, where I was 8th place Speaker of the Year in 2002, and was 12th place speaker at the World Championship. I also led the novice education program, teaching young college students how to debate, and coached the NYU Debate Team.

Writing

I have taught writing for over ten years to students of all ages, and I also work as a writing coach.
