About Jasmine

I have been teaching piano part time for about 6 years and full time since 2012. I have also tutored various subjects, such as math, writing, SAT and ACT test prep, and music theory on a part time basis for over 6 years. I love how teaching and tutoring have allowed me to meet many different kinds of people and to experience all the unique parts of San Diego. My favorite part about teaching is that every student is different- I love to customize my lessons based on the student's needs, goals, and learning style.

I like to work with students of all ages. Teaching younger students is fun because you get to be creative with how you keep them engaged. I also enjoy teaching older kids because I get to really have conversations with them about what we're studying, and it's so fulfilling to see that lightbulb go on in their heads! Adults are great because you can use their life experience to help them understand a given subject. I pride myself on making sure each of my students gets the education they need while also striving to make it enjoyable for them.

I have tutored a number of students in ACT Math. I know that often times students who take the ACT have not yet learned some of the concepts they need, such as trigonometry, and I try to teach them what they need to know in a way that's easy for them to remember.

For the science section of the ACT, I like to focus on how to simplify the passages and drawings. From my experience, what throws students the most is the use of scientific jargon and statistics, especially in the graphs. Showing them how to translate this information so that they can easily answer the questions has proven to be the most effective way to improve their score and reduce their stress!

I have always had a strange love for grammar, and the ACT really loves to test this, especially when it comes to correct use of punctuation. I like to provide a handout of all the grammar rules a student needs to be successful on this portion of the ACT.

I took piano lessons starting at the age of 7 and completed the Advanced Level of the Certificate of Merit Exam when I was 15, so I have a very strong background in classical music, theory, sight reading, technique, and ear training. As a piano teacher, I like to try to make piano fun for my students while also making sure they are always learning and improving. Figuring out how to strike this balance is my constant goal.

I look forward to helping your student de-stress and find their way through whatever material they are learning. I love to empower my students to be confident in themselves!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taken math classes through college Statistics and have always been good at math. I scored a 740 on the SAT Math section in high school. I have tutored students in Algebra as young as elementary school up to adults.

Algebra 2

I have experience tutoring high school students in Algebra II. I took the course when I was a sophomore in high school and did very well. I am especially familiar with the Algebra II concepts on the SAT and ACT tests.

Bible Studies

I went to a private Christian school from 1st-8th grade and again in 10th grade. I was involved in my Christian church from the age of 2 until 21. I played the piano for my church beginning at the age of 13 and was a youth leader and camp counselor for several years.

Piano

I took and passed the Certificate of Merit Exams up through the Advanced level. I have been teaching part time since 2003 and full time since 2012. I hold my own recitals twice a year.

Sociology

I minored in Sociology during my undergraduate education at UC Santa Cruz. I studied classical and contemporary sociological theory and did very well in all my classes. I also took more specialized sociology courses, such as social psychology. I received an Associate of Arts degree.

Writing

I have helped young students learn how to write essays, middle school students improve their writing and reading comprehension, and high school students write essays and prepare for their SAT and/or ACT. I also incorporate teaching my students the rules of grammar as needed. I have taken writing courses through the college level and co-wrote a Master's thesis. I also did very well in the writing sections of the SAT and ACT when I was in high school.

Yoga

I did my 200-hour power yoga certification with Core Power Yoga. I also did an Extension program with the same studio where I taught a portion of a class open to the public. I have been teaching free classes part time for almost a year.

Jasmine tutors both of my kids in math and then gives them piano lessons. She provides just the right amount of kindness, guidance, and structure, and is extremely knowledgeable. I highly recommend her.
