About Barbara

I have been a Communication Consultant and Teacher of English as a Second Language for over 25 years, and I have worked with students and professionals in many different countries to improve their English language and communication skills, both speaking and writing. I have helped Spanish speakers in the US, Mexico and Guatemala, both individually and in classroom settings. Since 2000, while living in Asia, I have worked closely with many Vietnamese, Chinese, Burmese, Lao, Thai, Indians, and other Asians.

I work with ESL learners at all English levels, from very beginning to the most advanced. I can help you master basic grammar, unravel the mysteries of pronunciation, speak more comfortably and confidently, and increase your vocabulary. I have had a lot of experience as a writer/editor and can help you create polished reports, proposals, documents and letters of application.

I have a Doctorate (PhD) in Communication and MAs in English and in International Relations. I worked as a teacher trainer for ESL. I am a California credentialed secondary and adult-level teacher. I got a perfect 800 score on my own English SAT exam.

English is a rich and beautiful language. You need it to study, live and work here, so you might as well love it. I can help you learn how. We will work hard, but also have a good time. My students always say they had fun with me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught English as a Second Language for adults of multi-lingual backgrounds for fifteen years in Washington DC (a language institute), New Orleans, LA (Tulane University) and Santa Cruz and Watsonville, CA (adult school.) My students ranged from adult school to university level and had a variety of goals: some were preparing for graduate school or undergrad studies while others wanted language skills to live in the US. I have trained ESL teachers at the University of California at Santa Cruz and was featured in a video of innovative teaching techniques.

French

I am fluent in French. I have passed a French qualifying exam at the doctoral level (Tulane University, PhD) and often conduct trainings or do consultations in French.

Political Science

I have an master's degree in international relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. The field of international relations is, in fact, political science, seen from a worldwide perspective. My qualifying exam was an exploration of the American foreign policy throughout the 20th century. My undergraduate degree in History, from Stanford University, supports my knowledge of political science. In addition, I have worked on political campaigns as a volunteer and as a page in national political conventions, giving me on-the-ground experience with politics.

Public Speaking

I have worked for over 25 years as a trainer and consultant in communication. Much of my work has involved helping clients build skills in interpersonal communication, especially public speaking. I have a doctorate in Communication for Health and Development from Tulane University (Center for Latin American Studies) a blended degree program which combined coursework in communication, sociology development, education and public health. Since 1999, I have worked as a communication consultant in many countries worldwide. Now I am based in San Diego where my son is in school.

Social Studies

I have a California standard teaching credential for secondary school and adult school for both English and Social Studies. My entire university education has been in the area broadly defined as Social Studies. I have a B.A. from Stanford University in History and honors in Humanities, a M.A. from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in International relations and a PhD from Tulane University (through the Center for Latin American Studies) that combined courses in sociology of development with education, communication and public health.

Study Skills

I have successfully navigated a bachelor's degree, 2 masters, and a doctorate in a cross disciplinary subject that required me to pass comprehensive exams in 4 fields at once (not the usual single field). I could never have done this without excellent organization and study skills. In addition, I have methods for studying language, increasing vocabulary, that I have developed for my own use. Although I have never tutored in this area, except getting my own kids through school, I am sure I know how to do it.

Writing

I am a writer myself, and a very experienced teacher of writing who has worked with students at all levels. I have experience with secondary school essays, College admissions essays, academic papers, journalism, letters, and many other writing styles. I have worked as a journalist and a consultant in communication and am about to publish my first book.
