Before I became a lawyer, I was a college-level teacher for five years and also taught writing and LSAT prep. I graduated with distinction from a top law school where I won several writing awards, and have been practicing law full-time for more than ten years. I've worked for private law firms and for the government, and have taught law in my spare time. I've also published both practical and scholarly articles, and have helped edit legal practice guides. I'm familiar with many areas of both federal and California law, including most of what you'll find on the California bar exam.
I tutor because I love bringing out the best in people, helping them discover what they are really good at, and helping them succeed at it. Whether it's law school classes, academic papers, or the bar exam, I can help.
I know how stressful and demanding bar exam study can be. I took and passed two bar exams (including California) the first time. I understand what you're going through, and what it takes to pass. I can help with the subject matter, test-taking strategy, and techniques.
Most lawyers can understand fairly complex ideas. A few can take complicated ideas and explain them in a simple, clear, and logical way so anyone can understand them. People who know me will tell you I'm one of those few. I have a strong academic background and through my practice I've become familiar with many different areas of the law. I can also help you with your legal writing, either on exams or academic papers.
Maybe you're nervous about the bar exam. (And, if you are, you're in good company!) Maybe you feel lost in one or more law school classes. Or maybe you'd just like to do better and could use some extra help. Whether you're just beginning or are finishing up your studies and hoping to begin practicing soon, I'll work with you to determine the best way to meet your goals, and help you step-by-step to meet them.
Depending on the subject or skill you need help with, I may ask you to send me materials you are working on, or an overview of what you need help with, so that I can be well prepared when we meet. I hold myself to a high standard, and I want you to get the most out of our classes.
I can accept a few students, and am available evenings and weekends only, so the sooner you contact me, the better the chance I will be available to help you. I teach adults, and prefer to meet in a library, cafe, or similar location. Before I became a lawyer, I was a college-level teacher for five years and also taught writing and LSAT prep. I usually check messages on weekdays only, so please contact me Monday through Friday. Ordinarily I don't schedule lessons shorter than 45 minutes or longer than 3 hours.
LSAT! We are still involved with future lessons! So far he has eased my fear with the upcoming test! Very patient and excellent teaching method! Easy to understand.. He gets to the bottom of it! No beating around the bush!
I came to Mark because I'm retaking the Lsat and I'm hoping to improve my score significantly. I could tell right away that Mark has had experience teaching as he was very clear and was able to quickly identify my needs. He is patient as is able to adapt to any previous knowledge you may bring to the lesson (I had taken a TestMasters course and Mark was able to work and build upon the knowledge I already had gained with them). He is professional and friendly—I was able to confine in him my scores and weaknesses without feeling embarrassed. 100% recommend and look forward to working with him again.
One word to describe Mark is PATIENT! Completely focuses on what I need, in order to learn the way I need to. His clear individualized approach to how he is tutoring me is actually helping me understand LSAT methods more so than those in a classroom setting.
Today I showed improvement on approaching and understanding logical reasoning questions, and Mark was quick to let me know that I was succeeding and showing Improvement. He is very encouraging and makes me want to study and improve my score
Mark was kind, adaptive, encouraging and validating! Mark was not well versed in the Law I was studying so he requested information and was prepared. I was offered study and test taking tips that were most helpful. I would recommend him to anyone!
This lesson involved preparation for a licensing exam covering the legal requirements that govern physical therapists. Obviously there aren't too many tutors who specialize in that area of the law! But I reviewed it for this lesson. That, plus my background and training in law generally and in test-taking techniques were the unique combination that was needed here.
Mark has been very helpful in learning all aspects of the LSAT. He has a very good understanding of how to simplify questions. My scores have gone up significantly since working with him. I wish I got to him sooner!
Mark is tutoring me in business law and is very sharp and knowledgeable about the subject. He makes understanding the concepts very easy.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I received my J.D. from Stanford Law School. I am licensed to practice law in both California and Texas. I have taught some law school classes. Before attending law school, I taught at the university level and I taught LSAT prep for Princeton Review.

I specialize in legal writing. Before law school, I taught academic writing classes for several years at the university level. Now that I am practicing law, my work requires that I write a great deal, and also review, critique, and correct others' writing.
